Woven Dreams

I'm thrilled to announce that Woven Dreams, book 3 of the Tapestries series, is available once again. It has a gorgeous new cover.

If you're looking for a smokin' hot ménage a trois to warm up the cold nights, you might want to give it a try.

Woven Dreams
Tapestries, Book 3

Forever beaten and abused by her cruel brothers, Genita Craddock has only managed to endure it by escaping into the imaginary world of the tapestry she created, one that features her brothers’ sworn enemies, the enigmatic Bakra brothers. But when she learns of her brothers’ plans to marry her off to a ruthlessly and brutal clan, she knows she must flee. Stealing away into the night, she unknowingly stumbles onto Bakra land—and into a world of unimagined pleasure.

Scarred and maimed from a battle with the Craddock brothers, Jarmon Bakra knows chances are slim that he and his twin brother, Garrik, will find a bride. So the two are stunned when they discover a beautiful young woman wandering on their land—especially one so open to their amorous advances. As they indulge her in every imaginable form of sensual bliss, hoping to secure her as their own, they also sense that the woman is harboring a dark secret that could somehow harm them and their family.

As their erotic adventures capture Genita’s heart as well as her body, she’s torn about revealing her true identity, fearful that the brothers will reject her. And when they vow to avenge the wounds inflicted on her, she knows they’ll face a battle more fearsome than any they’ve fought before. But with it would come the opportunity for Jarmon to even the score for his own injuries—and the chance for Genita to finally have the glorious life of love and passion she’s always desired…

“N. J. Walters [has an] exceptional talent for writing great stories with memorable characters and erotic encounters. This one is sure to leave you panting in excitement.” —Goodreads

I Met My Cover Model by Regina Kammer

In July, I went to San Diego for the annual conference of the Romance Writers of America. I attended sessions on the craft of writing, the business of promotion, and opportunities in publishing. I hung out with friends at the pool bar, watched a 19th-century fashion show, and attended the Hamilton sing-a-long.

I also watched a faux cover model shoot. With the guy who's been on three of my covers:

His name is Julian Christian. I had suspected he might be the model in attendance since the session presenters were Kim Killion and Jennifer Jakes of The Killion Group, Inc. -- the company which supplied all of the photos in the above covers (and created the cover for The General's Wife). Plus I happen to know Julian is San Diego-based.

I got to the conference room early, wanting to get a seat in the front. The room slowly filled with tittering, excited authors. And then the presenters arrived. With Julian:
He got up on the stage to begin the mock photo shoot:
Then he took his shirt off:
And when Julian took his shirt off, there was swooning, gasps, and sighs.
He posed as he would during a real cover shoot: Brooding,
shooting,
crouching (this drew breathy exclamations from the audience and a bemused look from Julian)
And then Jennifer Jakes walked around the room looking for a willing participant for a romantic suspense shot. As if we all weren't willing...
The young woman was chosen -- it happened to be her birthday! They did a romantic suspense pose:
Then Kim and Jennifer explained how they get male and female models to feel comfortable around each other so they can enact a romantic clinch like this
Another willing participant was sought from the audience for a historical or Amish romance cover. The volunteer author donned historical garb. Julian put a shirt on and played the dashing hero:
Then there was a costume change:
for a Scottish historical cover:
Another volunteer got to participate in a rather intimate historical pose:
After all the posing and the question and answer session, the authors lined up to get their pictures taken with Julian. Of course, I had to get mine taken
(thank you to Tricia Linden for taking my photo!)
Then historical romance author Sherry Ewing joined us for a threesome
I mean, we all just posed together!

It was fun, and Julian was a good sport with all the fawning, swooning female authors. He's super nice. I'm really glad I got the chance to meet the man on my covers!

p.s. if anyone knows who any of the author volunteers were, please let me know in the comments!

Selvya's gift for controlling fire made her a weapon in the hands of unscrupulous men. The king's commander offers a chance for revenge and redemption, but it's a risk she's not sure she can take.

Genre/Theme:
Fantasy, Fire, romance, duke, king

Selvya sat cross-legged on the bare stone floor, hands extended, struggling to control the tiny flame that danced on her palm. Such a small flicker and yet so hard to get it to move. Once she’d managed huge conflagrations and even directed an enormous forest fire. Now she could barely make this little wisp shift. For the last twenty minutes she’d bent her will on it and only produced a few wiggles.

She channeled all her energy into it, letting the heat and crackle of the flame resonate in her brain. Up another inch, she directed. The flame didn’t exactly resist. It began to stretch itself out, climbing upward a little. But she couldn’t generate the mental force to fuel its growth more than half an inch. Her hands trembled with the effort and exhaustion threatened the little control she had. With a deep sigh, she shook her fingers and dismissed the flame.

“That was better than yesterday.”

She yelped and spun around on her rear. Jorden Corsos, Duke of Cartallia, sat on one of the two hard iron chairs in the room. She hadn’t heard him enter, though given how hard she’d been concentrating, it didn’t surprise her.

“How long have you been there?”

Her knees locked when she tried to stand. He extended a hand to help her up and again she experienced that odd, frightening, humming sensation when their palms met.

“Ten minutes or so.” He made no reference to whatever passed between them, and his expression didn’t change when he released her. “You’ve made some progress. Yesterday there was nothing.”

“I barely managed this. So tiny and it still took so much effort to control it.”

“It’s coming to you.” He stood up and went to the door, spoke a few words to someone there, then returned. “Can we go somewhere more comfortable?  I’ve ordered a tea tray.”

She stared at him, bemused for a moment. “Of course.” What was he doing here? Checking up on her? Was he unhappy with her lack of progress? And why did her heart do a strange little flip-flop in her chest? She led the way to the next room, which served as a parlor. Padded chairs, a woven rug, a few tables, and shelves holding a variety of books made this a more relaxing space. He waited until she settled in one of the armchairs before he sat.

“Are you comfortable here?” He waved an arm around the room, encompassing this one and the other three rooms that made up the tower suite. “You’ve asked for very little.”

“And you’ve given me much more. The clothes alone…”

He smiled broadly. “Worth every pence. I still find it hard to believe you’re the same woman as the dirty, skinny, bedraggled creature I first met.”

“Fresh from the dungeon.”

“Even so. I’d never have guessed there was so much grace and beauty under all the grime.”

“You flatter, my lord.”

“Not a bit. The transformation is stunning.” He looked around. “You have all that you need?”

“At the moment, yes.”

“You’ve been able to call a bit of fire, I see, so your ability wasn’t completely burned out.”

She sighed. “Not all of it anyway. But what I can do is so limited now.”

He settled back in the chair. “Why is that, do you think?” He sounded curious but not worried. Because he didn’t want to seem to pressure her into too much effort too fast?

“I don’t know. I may have just used up every last bit of reserve I had when I did the fire for the young baron, and it will take time to restore it. Or perhaps creating that fire burned up whatever channels in my mind let me call and control the flame.”

“If that were true, you shouldn’t be able to create even the small spark you did earlier. Possibly what happened when you called that last flame was so horrible your mind rebelled and is blocking your attempts to do it again.”

She stared at him for a moment. From their first interactions, she’d known he was intelligent as well as handsome and high-born, but the depth of his understanding astonished her. “Yes, it’s possible.”

“It’s also possible that you’re now trying too hard. You’ve done nothing the last few days but work with the flame. You need to relax more.”

“You’ve had people spying on me?” Of course he did, silly. He’s invested a lot in you.

“The servers who bring your meals report back to me. You were already at work with the flame when they delivered the last two morning meals and still doing it at the evening meals.”

“You want the weapon I represent, and I want to have this war done with.”

A sweet departure for Suz deMello: Secret Father

While the Naughty Literati specialize in sexy, steamy or even scorching-hot romance, for a major part of my career I wrote sweet romances for Harlequin. I wrote for Silhouette Romance, a now defunct traditional romance category. While I was doing so, I wrote Secret Father, which Harlequin didn't buy--the line folded and I was orphaned, a dire situation for a writer.

That was a long time ago. I shifted my focus and started to write steamy, erotic romance, which to me reflects the natural, sexual nature of humans as thinking animals. Sweet romance always seemed so artificial, and I ended up writing it due to the mismanagement of my first agent, who really wasn't paying attention to a then-inexperienced and little known writer. It was actually a fairly frustrating time for me as a writer--I found myself creating situations to get my characters married and into bed ASAP, at least by the midpoint of the book--the tenets of sweet romance allow sex after marriage, and some of my books became moderately--well, not graphic, but clearly, the characters were doing it with a fair level of realistic though not crude description.

So, Secret Father languished--until now. I released Secret Father independently of any publisher, having had enough of behavior that seems to range from incompetence to outright thievery.

Here's a little about it:

When Linda Travers was fourteen, Dave Madsen, then age seventeen, rescued her from a snowy death. They later met at an end-of-term party at their college and lost their virginities to each other before Dave left the country.

And now...Despite spending her teenage years mooning over Dave, Linda has moved on with her life. Being left pregnant and alone will force that on a gal. Age twenty-five, she lives in their hometown with their six-year-old, Mac. Then botanist Dave reappears. A vicious snakebite has left him needing rehab from the only physical therapist around—Linda.

Their college lovemaking was the first time for both, so Linda and Dave remember each other. She’s amazed to feel the same old anger, hurt, and need. Less emotional, Dave’s curious about Linda, wondering why she didn't leave her address and phone number for him when what they’d shared had been so good. Neither totally believes the explanations the other offers.

Since the rescue, Dave was always Linda’s hero, but she doesn’t know him anymore. Is he worthy of fathering their son? And what of their love? Can they create a future…together as a family?

Jill’s been curious about BDSM since reading Fifty Shades, and firefighter Zack is more than willing to scratch that itch for her.

Genre/Theme:
Contemporary, firefighter, BDSM

Excerpt:

Jill had been dating Zack for a couple of months and they were in a good place, she felt. They saw each other two or three times every week, not just for booty calls but for dates and other outings like hiking and bike riding. They liked the same food, music, and movies. They were compatible politically and didn’t fight about radio stations—they both liked NPR—or TV shows—Game of Thrones, True Detective.

But did she want to go further, deeper? Yes, she did.

The sex had been excellent, but without the kink she’d dreamed about and had been counting on. He was holding himself back, she knew, based on their discussions of what he liked. He hadn’t even tied her up or spanked her, and she was disappointed. Not only did she want to experience some light BDSM, but she accepted that he needed kink to be truly happy, and she had gotten to the point of wanting him to be happy. With her. She wasn’t sure she loved him, but she liked him and wanted to see where the relationship would lead. Keeping Mr. Happy satisfied was the surest way to that result.

Did he want her to ask, even beg? She didn’t know if she had the words. Wandering the aisles at the local Target had given her an idea, though, so she dressed for their weekly Saturday night date with more care than usual. Then she added a couple of unusual accessories she’d purchased in the pet department.

*****

When Jill opened her front door for their Saturday night date, Zack let his gaze skate over her outfit. A snug LBD in velvet, hemline short and neckline low but not too revealing. He liked that. He preferred women to be ladies on the street and demons between the sheets, and so far, she’d filled the bill.

Then he noticed her accessories. A pink leather collar. Good God—was that a dog collar? Whatever it was, it signaled a desire to submit. And two more around her wrists, clear references to bondage.

Whoa. So his sweet little Jill was ready to get kinky. His heart pounded, and every drop of blood raced straight to his cock.

“I signed up for speed dating tonight.”

He stared. “Why?”

That was the nicest compliment a man had ever given her. “To meet guys. The ones I know from work, professional organizations, and have run into at bars are married, divorced, cheating, or gay. Some of them hit on several of those notes. I’m not being critical, but I don’t want to get lost in that other stuff.”

“I hear you. Does speed dating actually work?”

“Haven’t a clue. I wasn’t certain whether to pick the fit-and-active group, the one with those who have professional degrees, or the gang limited to those between twenty-five and thirty-six. In the online photos, a lot of them looked much older.”

“Which one did you choose?”

“Professionals who love Adele.”

“The singer?”

She laughed. “I’m kidding. I went with the professional degree holders. I figured if things didn’t pan out with any of those guys, I’d work my way down the list. After that, I didn’t have a plan.”

“Sure you want to ditch this event? Even if you miss part of what goes on, I should be able to get you there for some of the action.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m fine.” Better than she’d been in ages, enjoying this and him.

His smile said he wasn’t having a bad time either. He scanned the channels, stopping on Adele’s Hello. “This okay?”

Perfect. “Yeah, thanks.”

“Hungry?”

In more ways than he could imagine. “Why?”

“Your stomach keeps growling.”

She hadn’t had an appetite all day, dreading the fiasco tonight. “I could eat.”
“I don’t have much.” He pulled a huge M&Ms bag from the glove compartment. “You’re welcome to this.”

“Only if you join me. I’m a chocoholic. I’ve learned not to indulge alone.”

His dimples deepened. “I’ll protect you from yourself.”

They chomped happily, content in their comfortable silence, the world around them gone crazy. Sirens, shouts, blaring horns, police bellowing orders added to the cacophony. A treat slipped from her hand.

With surprising speed, Ben caught it. “Here you go.” He slipped the candy between her lips.

Her mouth went dry, blood thundering in her ears. Ignoring the M&M, she tongued his finger. Tasted better than the chocolate. His lashes were impossibly dark and long, his lime scent tinged with musk. The last time she’d looked, his bulge had been more pronounced than before. “Thanks.”

If he noticed how breathless she sounded, he didn’t say, thumbing her bottom lip instead. “You have some chocolate….”

Maddy moved into him, Ben did the same with her, their mouths molded together, his tongue slipping inside, filling, thrilling. This was the craziest thing she’d ever done in her staid life, and it felt so damn right. Eight months she’d gone without sex. Even more time had passed since a guy had simply hugged her.

Tell Me a Romance Story! by Marianne Stephens

I enjoy reading many genres/heat levels of romances. Here are things I want to find in any romance story I read:

Tell me a story with a good plot to hold my interest, and a blossoming romance exploding with passion.  I want to “see” your story in my head, and “feel” the heroine’s emotions. I want to relate to her, no matter what her age is…or mine. Romance has no age boundaries.

Tell me a story of a hero and heroine who know each other already, or have just met. Unrequited love and the desire to have someone love you set the stage for many romance books. The chase is all part of the rocky road to love.

Tell me a story of an adversarial hero and heroine thrust upon each other because of some situation. That thin line between love and hate can be crossed, enough so that fighting ceases and lovemaking begins. Fighting a powerful attraction dissipates as passion takes control.

Tell me a story that has a “black moment”…that awful turn of events that split the hero and heroine, and their relationship appears to be doomed. Let me want to scream at them to settle their misunderstanding, mend broken hearts, and enjoy embracing each other once again.

Tell me a story of their first encounter/or having already met. Add what’s wedged between them to cause heartache, resolve their differences, and give me that “happily-ever-after” I want to read.

I pattern my books after these desires. I know what I want in a romance story, and use these elements in my books.

Whatever your preference in romance reading…sweet, sensual, erotic, romance books…choose books that tell YOU a story and transport you into the hero and heroine’s love affair!
