Medieval romance from the Highland Vampires series. A Viking raider brings change to little Clan Kilbirnie, especially to the chieftain’s daughter, Rhona.

Leaning forward, Erland stroked her cheek, gazed into her eyes and set his lips on hers.
Cool they were, but with an underlying fire. Letting her eyes drift shut, she pushed her mouth against his, sure he held the key, knew the secret, could give her everything she’d ever wanted.

From where had that crazed thought sprung?

Her lids popped open, her eyes meeting his.

“Aye,” he murmured. “Everything.”

How did he ken her very thoughts?

Did that matter?

No, she decided. The how of it wasn’t important. That he understood was enough...more than enough.
She threw her arms around his neck and pressed her body against his. He kissed her with more determination and opened her lips with his, then gently slid his tongue inside.

She jerked away. “Och!”

He chuckled. “Bear with me, mistress.”

Another kiss, and now she tentatively let him in. She sought his tongue, eager to learn this new game, and he responded by allowing her to play as she wished.

She became entirely absorbed. She’d seen folk in shadowed corners of the castle kissing, but had never understood the reason people liked it so much. Now she did. She wanted to kiss Erland for the rest of the night. That she might have to kiss him for the rest of their lives... Well, that wouldna be so bad, would it?

He seemed to have other ideas—more ideas—for he started to explore her body. His fingers caressing her breasts along with his kiss was intoxicating, mesmerizing.

Would he feel the same if she did the same? Still with closed eyes and questing mouth, she blindly reached out and touched his chest. Cool and firm, with soft smooth skin overlaying hard muscle, his chest was almost as interesting as his lips and... She opened her eyes. His face. Och, aye.

She loved his face.

She blinked. “Oh,” she breathed.

He smiled, teeth perfect and pearly, then took her long, dark hair in one hand. He used it to tug her head to one side... Why?

He kissed her neck, feathering his tongue over the sensitive skin, and all conscious thought fled. She gripped his shoulders, then stroked them, admiring his strength, a contrast to his sweet, sweet kisses.
Her body was heating, tingling, sizzling, and she wanted to touch herself the way she did when she was alone at night, but... Wasn’t that wanton? Would he cease to treat her kindly if he knew the desires that drove her?

He lifted his head. “Touch yourself. Touch yourself in whatever way feels good to you.”

Blurb:
Sirena Petra wants one thing for Christmas—an orgasm. And sex toy expert Kenyon Fort has exactly what the lion shifter needs to find more than just her happy place.

Chapter One

Almost there. Just a little bit more.

Every muscle in Sirena Petra’s body stretched taut and she panted to draw much-needed oxygen into her burning lungs. Perspiration glistened on her skin as she writhed against black silk sheets, desperate to crest the plateau. Her need to orgasm had surpassed the crisis point and become painful agony.

Fumbling with the buttons beneath her fingertips, she shifted the silver vibrating marvel into overdrive. The device buzzed louder and metal beads in the shaft sprung to life, rotating against her sweet spot as devilish projections tormented her pulsing clitoris.

With her other hand, Sirena palmed a heavy breast and pinched her taut nipple. Fiery jolts of sensation arced between the two pleasure centers. Her body clenched, going statue-still for several heartbeats as she teetered on the edge of the precipice…

And once again fell flat without finding satisfaction.

She reached between trembling thighs, the still-humming toy creating a wet slurping sound as she pulled it from the tight clasp of her pussy. When she dropped it onto the bed, the plastic toy gave a halfhearted, weak jiggle and shiny silver balls slowed then ceased spinning as the motor wheezed, coughed and gave one final death rattle before falling silent.

All she wanted for Christmas was an orgasm or two. She didn’t think that was asking too much.

Cursing a blue streak, Sirena grabbed her cell phone from the nightstand and texted “911” to Kenyon Fort. Less than a minute later music from her favorite indie rock band filled the room. She slid her thumb over the touch screen and shivered as Kenyon’s rich smoke-and-whiskey voice glided across her sensitized body in a velvety caress.

“What did you break this time?”

“The expensive as hell Platinum Powerhouse,” she huffed. Oh, she hadn’t paid full price. Never did. She had a great deal worked out with Kenyon. He sold her toys at cost and she designed and maintained his website at a majorly discounted rate. Theirs was the perfect partnership.

Kenyon sighed his frustration. “Well, now you’re really screwed, Kitten.”

Her heart fluttered hearing his pet name for her but her gaze narrowed on the vibrator, brow furrowing with her irritation. “How so?”

“The Platinum Powerhouse was the big guns, Sirena. The last resort. You’ve tried all the strongest vibrators available. Hell, I made that one specifically for you.”

“So that means…” Her words trailed off and she swallowed hard.

“You’re shit out of luck,” Kenyon finished for her. “There is no vibrator that can survive the abuse you dish out.”

He muttered something under his breath she didn’t try to make out, all her thoughts wrapped up in her current dilemma. Major downside to the strength inherent in being a shape-shifting lioness—the strong contractions of her pelvic muscles. She’d strangled all her vibrators to an untimely death and had yet to find a living, breathing man who could get her where she needed to go during sex.

“But Ken—” She cringed at the plaintive tone of her voice. “What the hell am I going to do?” If only her kind weren’t so rare then she’d have a chance of finding a mate.

Sirena shook her head. She didn’t really want a mate. Male cats were either loners who never stayed in one place for long or polygamists who had a pride of women they fucked. They certainly weren’t committed to any one female. Her footloose and fancy free father stood as the perfect example, constantly shuffling around between eight lionesses who shared him. Sirena wanted children but had no desire to be a sister wife or a single parent trying to raise a shifter cub in a predominantly human society without the support of his or her father. No thanks!

“Have you considered trying a real cock? Because, damn, Sirena, I’ve got to be honest here. That powerful pussy of yours has become the star of my favorite fantasies.”

“Gee, Kenyon, now why didn’t I think of that?” Sirena sighed heavily. “Every real cock I’ve tried hasn’t lasted long enough. Size and shape don’t matter—neither do skill of the user. Even the porn star with the supposed legendary stamina wasn’t able to go the distance.”

Kenyon’s breathing quickened and he groaned. If Sirena wasn’t in such a state of abject misery she would have laughed instead of getting irritated by his rather typical male reaction.

“Kenyon?”

“Yeah?” His voice had deepened, taken on a sexy rasp.

“You better not be whacking off or I’m going to hunt you down, string you up by your balls and spend hours torturing you.”

“Damn it, Sirena, would you stop trying to turn me on.”

His unexpected comment brought her up short. What kind of man got hot and bothered by a threat?

“Don’t give up your day job to become a comedian because you’re really not very funny.”

“That wasn’t a joke but whatever, I have an idea. I’ll need a couple of hours. You weren’t planning on going out, were you?”

“In my current mood… Hell no. I’d probably rip some poor slob’s throat out for daring to glance my way. But, um—”

“Okay, good. Hang tight.”

Hang tight?

In the spring, a vampire’s fancy turns to the blood lust mating hunt. A pretty, human blackmailer becomes the object of his thirst, but she’s not into vampires. Yet.

“I know you’re a vampire.”

Caden Chase blinked. It was rare for anyone or anything to surprise him, but the slim woman in the yellow blouse and tailored slacks sitting in the chair on the other side of his office desk had managed to do just that. If nothing else, the past three months should have taught him to expect the unexpected where Serena Bliss was concerned.

“Do you mind repeating that?” Caden drawled his words, playing for time to assess the seriousness of this sudden crisis. He kept his tone low and controlled, striving for a cross between puzzlement and amusement, neither of which he felt at the moment.

His gaze ran over Serena’s form, searching the telltale pulse points at her throat and wrists with his heightened senses, trying to detect whether or not she was telling the truth or merely making a wild guess. As usual his attraction for this human female was distracting him. His jaw clenched. Damn, she looked good. Like a joyful drop of sunlight splashed on the coarse fabric of his dark world too full of midnight blacks and blood reds. But she was the last human he should be thinking of for a casual fling. And the more he got to know her, the more he wanted her for more than that.

Serena arched an eyebrow in blatant challenge. The action showed admirable bravado for one who believed she was at that moment in the presence of a bloodthirsty monster. One who could drain her in less time than it took for her next heartbeat to sound.

“I’m pretty sure you heard me, Mr. Chase. I understand that a vampire’s hearing is quite keen.”

It was true. Her throaty, melodic voice, for example, could arrest his attention from three floors away even in the middle of a busy workday.

“I think you’ve been reading too much Twilight, Ms. Bliss.” He didn’t like this new formality she was imposing like a barrier between them. Last week they had called one another by their first names, sometimes even with flirty smiles that made him look forward to each workday with her all the more. He was determined to find out the cause of her distinctly guarded shift in tone with him.

She tossed her caramel colored hair over her shoulders in clear impatience. Hellfire. She had sexy hair. Thick, shiny, and long enough to wrap around his knuckles while he held her still for his kiss…or his penetration. Or a love bite on her elegant neck. Hey, a vampire could dream, right?

“Don’t patronize me, Mr. Chase.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it, Ms. Bliss. So tell me. ‘Team Edward’ or ‘Team Jacob’?”

She bit the corner of her soft lower lip in chagrin. Damnation. Don’t get him started on her pink, bow-shaped mouth that always looked as though it had just been thoroughly kissed. Ever since she’d started working for him, he couldn’t stop fantasizing that he was the lucky male who made her lips look so tender and lush.

Until she had called him out as a vampire just now he’d hoped finally to get the opportunity to taste those lips. At some point, anyway, after inviting her out to dinner on her last day of her independent contract with Chase Industries, Inc. Which was today, in fact. So much for that brilliant plan. She’d probably run screaming from the building if he suggested the two of them go out for a bite now. He would have to find another way to get close enough to sample that mouth.

“I don’t enjoy being toyed with, Mr. Chase.” She frowned at him severely.

He bit back a smile. Bambi trying to stare down Godzilla. Adorable.

He yanked his thoughts back to the more pressing matter at hand. What did she know, and when did she know it?

“Sorry. I can be a real pain in the neck sometimes, I know,” he quipped with a grin, deliberately showing far too many teeth. She shot him a wary glance. He felt her pulse throb in the air between them a bit harder in mild alarm. Good. She should be a little worried at this point. That showed at least a modicum of common sense. But he didn’t want to scare her away completely.

“I should warn you that if anything happens to me, I’ve taken steps that will automatically release the information I have about you to the proper authorities.”

“If you believe you’re threatening a vampire, I should certainly hope you took some common sense precautions,” he muttered. “But under the new Vampire Immersion Act, a citizen can’t go around accusing another of being a vampire without evidence of some kind. It would be like yelling ‘vampire!’ in a crowded blood blank. You could start a serious public panic. So tell me, why would you imagine I’m one?”

“Not just you. Your whole staff is chock full of vampires. As you well know.” She lifted her chin, daring him to contradict her.

“Oh, really? What tipped you off? Our black capes, red eyes, penchant for bats, and widow’s peaks?” He kept a scoffing tone but the utter certainty in her assertion gave him pause for real concern. He hoped she hadn’t voiced her accusations to anyone else. It would be a lot safer for Serena Bliss if she didn’t mention her suspicions to anyone but him.

In answer to his questions, she gestured to the glass wall partition that separated his office from the room beyond, where various Chase Industry, Inc. employees worked in cubicles.

“Gee. I wonder,” she mused in a mocking tone he didn’t like one bit. “For one thing, Henrick types about a thousand words per minute more than he claims on his resume.” Caden’s gaze followed the direction of her strawberry-polished fingernail and saw Henrick, one of his administrative assistants, typing on his computer with preternatural speed. His long fingers were a blur on the keyboard.

Serena didn’t wait for Caden to think of a rational explanation. Not that there was one.

“And by the way, have you ever noticed that Bryan always seems to have something other than java in his coffee mug?” She pointed at another pale man sitting at a cube desk. He took a sip from his mug that read, “Accountants Do It By The Numbers” and lowered it to reveal a thick, blood mustache on his upper lip.

“And then there is Vanessa.”

Caden wearily glanced over to where an impossibly beautiful brunette in a figure-hugging black tank top, pencil skirt, and stilettos was standing by the office water cooler. She applied deep red lipstick while looking into a compact mirror.

He gave a silent sigh of relief. “She’s looking into a mirror. Hardly something a vampire could do, right?”

Serena smiled sweetly in a way that was decidedly not. “Wait for it.”

They watched as Vanessa smacked her ruby lips together and then grinned into the compact to check her teeth. There was a smudge of red gloss on one of her incisors. Suddenly, the tooth elongated, pointy and sharp. She used her thumb to wipe off the excess lipstick from her fang.

Caden winced. His team had gotten sloppy with a nice, sweet human like Serena around the office for the past three months. They had grown to like and trust her enough so as to accept her into their midst. But they had clearly gotten too comfortable in her presence, letting their guard down to a dangerous degree. He’d have to have a serious talk with them about that.

He eyed Serena, reaching out with his extrasensory awareness to assess her feelings about what she had just shown him. She wasn’t as calm as she tried to appear according to her raised pulse rate, but she didn’t seem terrified. Yet. He stole what small comfort he could from that.

“And me? What makes you think I’m a vampire?” He sounded more nonchalant than he felt.

“You’re kidding, right?” She waved airily at the floor to ceiling window of his office.

Caden glanced out the window where dusk was falling on a panoramic view of the Los Angeles skyline. In the glow of his desk lamp he saw everything in his office reflected in the glass, including Serena’s lovely body in the chair across from him. Where his reflection ought to have been, however, there was only an empty chair.

“Kind of an undead giveaway right there. Wouldn’t you say so, Vlad?”

Jessica and Nathaniel Whitewolf celebrate their thirtieth anniversary as True Mates but they’ve lost their bond. Now a hot couples’ retreat will get it back.

Chapter One

She heard his step on the stairs and dished his bacon and eggs onto the plate. Right on schedule. Just like every morning. He walked into the kitchen and absently kissed her cheek as he sat down at the table. He ate neatly, as he always did.

Jessica Whitewolf watched her True Mate as he read the paper, his forehead knotted in thought. He’d been so focused on a case lately. One of his patients was late in a high risk pregnancy and he had been seeing her often so that she’d have a healthy pup.

Jess knew she shouldn’t feel jealous, the wolf bitch needed Nat’s attention. Sadly though, Jess couldn’t remember the last time her Mate focused so keenly on her. She fought the envy down and choked it off, wishing the best for the expectant mother.

“What are your plans today?” she asked.

Jess could almost predict what he’d say even though they rarely used their True Mate telepathic bond anymore. He’d talk about spending the day at the clinic and checking on his special case. Then he’d get up, give her a quick kiss and tell her he’d see her tonight.

“It’s a clinic day. I’ll be slammed all day with office visits.”

“Any interesting cases? How is Missy Goldwolf doing?”

“Missy?”

Jess smiled. Nat was a stickler about confidentiality. “She’s pregnant. She’s had a difficult pregnancy and everyone in the entire valley is holding their breaths hoping she’ll carry to term. It isn’t hard to figure out, honey.”

He rose and crossed the room. “I suppose not. She’s holding her own. I’m just glad that Yohana approved the upgrade to the obstetrics and neonatal units at the hospital.”

“Well, considering she’ll need it soon herself, it was a no-brainer for the council.”

“She didn’t know that at the time it was approved, but my thanks to the council,” Nat smiled and gave her a wink since Jess was part of that civic body. “I better go. See you tonight, right?” He kissed her cheek, picked up his briefcase and headed for the front door. Jess followed.

“The kids sent cards.”

“Hmm?” he asked absently as she followed him.

“Anniversary cards,” she hinted. “For us.”

“That’s nice.” He opened the door and left without turning around once. She watched him walk to the car and waved as he drove away. He didn’t wave back. She wasn’t even sure he’d seen her.

Jess sighed. When had this happened? When had they become so comfortable and…boring. She turned around and went inside to wash up in the kitchen before she headed over to her landscaping business.

“You should get one. You and your lady,” Rene said. “We get ours at Sinful Designs on the boardwalk. They do the best work.”
Ah, now he got it. “I suppose you two work there? Or own the business.”
She laughed. “You think we’re trying to drum up sales?”
Sam nodded.
“No, nothing like that. But there is something special about Sinful Designs that you won’t find at any other tattoo parlor.”
“Is that right?” Sam called over the bartender and ordered another beer and a drink for Rene. “Don’t take this the wrong way but are you two hitting on us?”
“Not exactly,” Perry said, looking up from his show-and-tell for Anita. “We saw you watching us earlier—”
“And you thought we’d like to hook up with you two,” Sam finished the sentence, sounding slightly annoyed but intrigued.
“That’s not it,” Rene said. “But I bet you wished you were out there having the most amazing sex with Anita. Am I right?”
“Sure,” Sam said.
Anita smiled nervously, then sipped more of her drink.
“What if I told you there was a way to increase your sexual enjoyment by at least ten times, be more adventurous, have longer hard-ons, and multiple orgasms?” Rene looked at Anita. “Anita, wouldn’t you love to have multiple orgasms whenever you willed them to happen?”
Anita rolled her eyes. “I have orgasms.”
“Four or five in one night, without being touched?”
“I’d say you’re full of shit,” Anita said.
Sam nearly choked on his beer. Anita Brooke never swore in front of strangers. She was getting drunk. Damn, he wasn’t getting any tonight.
“Do you believe in magic, the supernatural?”
“I try to keep an open mind.” Sam didn’t want to discount anything. But more than that, he wanted to see where this was going.
“Try one of these tattoos at Sinful Designs. Just one. I promise you won’t be disappointed,” Rene said. A look of fear flashed across her eyes and sent a shiver down Sam’s spine. She didn’t look the type to scare easily.
“Sounds too good to be true,” Sam said as he briefly fantasized a few possibilities—sex on the raft, sex with this couple, and a few positions Anita wasn’t crazy about trying. His cock throbbed as his heart pounded in his chest. The woman didn’t look like she was lying. Was business that bad that this tattoo parlor would think up this fantastical story to bring in a few customers?
Rene placed a hand on his arm. “Honest, Sam, we don’t make out financially if you get a tattoo. We’re just amazed by this woman. She’s a witch you know. Her name is Cassandra.”
“A witch?” Anita asked.
Rene smiled at Sam. “Trust me. You will have the most scorching sex you could ever imagine.”

In the Cards

What would happen if you found a picture of your ideal fantasy man on a greeting card? That's what happens to Catherine Ryan while she's searching for the perfect birthday card for her sister.

Here's a little taste of In the Cards, now available.

* * * * *

Catherine shifted on the bed, and winced when sore areas between her thighs complained. She'd had erotic dreams many times, but none of them had felt so real. If she didn't know better, she would swear her fantasy man had actually been here, in her bed, making wild, passionate, earth-shattering love to her.

Too much time staring at that card, Cat.

With a heavy sigh, she rolled to her side toward the window. She liked to look at the early morning sunshine before she rose from the bed. Instead, today she looked into the face of her fantasy man...only he wasn't a fantasy, but very real.

Catherine blinked. And blinked again. She must still be dreaming. That had to be the answer. But it didn't seem like a dream. The warmth of the sun touched her face. Her soft pillow supported her head. Her silky chemise caressed her skin. Surely all those things wouldn't seem so real if she dreamed.

Slowly, she reached out and touched his hair that lay over his ear. Soft, as soft as her own. Her gaze followed her hand as it drifted down his arm. Warm skin overlay firm muscle. A light dusting of hair covered his forearm. That, too, felt real.

She raised her gaze back to his face. His open eyes stared at her.

"Good morning," he whispered.

What's in a Name? By Suz deMello (#writing #naNoWriMo)

I'm sure I'm not the first writer to blog about the significance of names, nor will I be the last. There's even a wiki about choosing character names!

Authors carefully choose names. Why?

First, the right name must fit in with your story. Tolkien wouldn't have called one of his characters John Smith--John wouldn't fit in with Bilbo Baggins or Galadriel.

Secondly, some names are so famous that popular references have attached. Don't name a character Adolf, Madonna, Elvis or Marilyn--that choice will jar a reader right out of the story, and that's the last thing that an author wants. We want to keep the reader immersed in the wonderful, engrossing world we've created.

http://a.co/4qStMAR
But an author can use that to her advantage. In Spy Game, my hero is named Richard Rexford--a conscious aping of Robert Redford. Richard is also a handsome, athletic blond, and I wanted readers to make the association.

contains Ocean Dreams and
Viking in Tartan

http://a.co/ftMIDIO
Few readers picked it up, but I named a character in Ocean Dreams Sandi Ricks, after a character in the old Flipper TV show--Ocean Dreams is about a very unusual dolphin.

Also, I try to avoid too many names in a story that start with the same letter, which will confuse a reader, especially if there are a lot of characters introduced quickly. Avoid Martin and Maria, Barbara and Bobby, Jane and Jenny.

I avoid names that are unpronounceable. Readers don't only look at words on the page, but their minds are reading to them. When I as a reader encounter an odd name, I find myself falling out of the book and trying to figure out how the name is pronounced. So I avoid Gaelic names that are confusing. None of my characters will ever be named Airdsgainne or Slaibhin. In futuristics or sci-fi, one often encounters names with accents or apostrophes in odd paces. Avoid these. They distract and may even annoy a reader.

http://a.co/5d9XZCD
Every name has an intrinsic meaning. Dickens was famous for his interesting names, which often reflected characters' personalities. The Artful Dodger is only too obvious. Esther Summerson (Bleak House) is one of Dickens' most lovely characters, lightening one of his longest and yes, most bleak books. Stryver in A Tale of Two Cities is, indeed, an ambitious striver.

I often take my cues from Dickens. In a book I wrote for Harlequin/Silhouette, The Ranger and the Rescue, the heroine calls herself Serenity Clare, a name she chose for herself after she left an abusive husband. She pursues serenity and clarity in her life.

The hero of Viking in Tartan, Erland Blodson, is a warrior and also a vampire. The name Erland means "leader." Blodson is also obvious.

In my memoir, Perilous Play, I had to rename a man I know in order to protect his privacy. I chose the name Trapper Hart.

It wasn't a very good relationship.

I also look at the sounds of names. In Queen of Shadow, a futuristic, I created a name--Storne--for my hero, using a lot of strong-sounding consonants.

If you're a writer, how do you choose names?

If you're a reader, what character names are particularly memorable for you?
