Getting Naughty Excerpt: Chasing Flavorgasms by Francesca Hawley

Chapter One

John “Doc” Holliday’s chair creaked as he leaned back after he’d finished reading the scathing review aloud. No other noise could be heard. He stared at the screen, somehow outside himself, frozen. He remembered intimate dinners with Taylor. Times when she’d moan in pleasure at the food he’d created for her. But this was the best she could do? Anger slowly bubbled up. Twisting his gut. Heating his face. He reread key phrases silently, clenching his hands to keep from pounding on things.

Hit by the kitchen door. Revenge. Pissing contest. Amateur. Disappointment. Snoozefest. Faked it.

She’d never faked it before! He boiled out of his office chair and spun around. Staff scattered. Hid.

Good, God damn it! They’d better.

“Who the fuck is Growler?” he shouted. No one spoke. “Where is the motherfucker’s nice ass? I’m going to rip a hole in it deep enough to shove an overpriced bottle of wine!”

He prowled from his office into the kitchen to vent his wrath on the defenseless china, hurling plates against the wall. They shattered in a satisfying crash.

“Chef, he’s gone.”

Doc whipped around and stalked toward his maître d’ and front of house manager, Chris Mitchell. Chris flinched but faced up to stalking lion.

“Gone?” He got in Chris’ face.

“I fired him as soon as I read the review.”

“Why?”

“He deserved it, didn’t he?”

“Damn straight.” Doc took a step off, turned and leaned on the counter.

“So it’s done.”

“Who was it?”

“I don’t think you need to worry about that. Front of house is my purview.”

“Damn it, Chris—”

“No, Doc.” He turned but Chris threw up his hands. “I don’t want to bail you out of jail ever again.”

“Fuck.”

Chris was right…as usual. Leaning against the counter, he dropped his head and crossed his arms over his chest as the rage dissipated.

“Never again,” Doc ordered.

“Chef?”

Doc looked at Chris. “Never again. Take that table out.”

“We lose two seats.”

“Then we fucking lose two seats. No guest is going to be hit by the kitchen door ever again.”

“Where do we put the table?”

“Get rid of it. Give it to someone on staff. Donate it to charity. I don’t care. Lose the table.”

“The chairs?”

“Find a place to store the chairs but get rid of that damn table.”

“Yes, Chef.”

“This was last Wednesday, yes?”

“It was. How did you—?”

“You were out sick, which you never are, and the walk-in died. We had to throw everything out.”  He shook his head. “I went hunting for caviar but had to use salmon roe. The brine made it too salty.” He glared at his sous chef, Joni Michaels. She blanched but stood straight. “I ordered another rinse then it should have been iced.”

“Your orders were followed, Chef.”

“Then how the fuck did we serve warm overly salty caviar? A clear water bath would have leached out the extra salt then the roe should have been served on a bed of shaved ice.”

“It was. Perhaps she was overly sensitive to salt?”

“And perhaps monkeys might fly out my ass.”

“Or not?”

“Definitely not.” He eyed Joni. “Is it possible the roe went back into the brine rather than clear water?”

She frowned, thinking back. Her cheeks reddened then went deathly pale. “Yes, Chef,” she whispered. “Do you want my resignation?”

“Fuck no. Just don’t do it again.”

“But…”

He shook his head, rubbing his hands over his face. “It’s my responsibility. I should have tasted it before it left the kitchen. The food fuck-ups are on me.”

“Yes, Chef.”

It was his kitchen. His restaurant. All the damn fuck-ups were on him. He sat on the counter and eyed Chris.

“Is the Piece of Shit POS system fixed and the back-up book found?”

“The point of service system was repaired the following day.”

“And the book?”

“Found after service.”

He wracked his brain about how those problems might have happened. Growler had to have been Ted. He wasn’t here and he’d been the idiot who’d let “Billy the Kid”

McCarty in the employee entrance.

Billy. The epitome of a frenemy – best friend and worst enemy – and the owner of rival restaurant, Fucile da Caccia – Italian for “The Shotgun”.

“I think we can lay the computer problem and the book at Billy’s door. He wouldn’t fuck with the food, but the other? Oh yeah. I can see him messing that shit up.”

“Billy McCarty was here?”

“Ted let him in early in the afternoon.” He tilted his head. “Find out if Ted landed on his feet and is working at McCarty’s place.”

“Ted?”

“Oh come on. We both know that Growler was Ted. Billy might have poached him while encouraging him to do a bit of damage on his way out. Or the incidental damage may have been Ted’s idea.”

“Ted was getting the idea that his shit didn’t stink,” Chris sighed.

“He also thought he was a better sommelier than you are.”

“He what?” Chris bristled, his eyes narrowing.

Doc laughed. “I thought that might piss you off. Don’t worry, bro. Ted sucks as a sommelier. You have nothing to worry about. You’re the best damn maître d’ I’ve had running any of the places I’ve worked in.”

“Fuckin’ A.”

They fist bumped and Doc laughed.

“Still it wouldn’t hurt to run the front of house staff through some additional training.”
Chris nodded, “Yes, Chef. That’s a good idea. I’ll call people to come in early for their shifts. They’ll want to be paid.”

“They will be. And let’s do regular training for a while. Include some practice on what to do if you’re not here and if we have problems during service.”

Doc frowned. That didn’t fix the current situation though. That review wouldn’t ruin him but it damn well wouldn’t help. The young and trendy foodies in San Francisco followed her blog so they knew he’d been dissed.

He could find a friendly newspaper and lie his ass off, claiming she was full of shit. It might even work. In the old days, that’s exactly what he would have done. But in the last few years he’d been attempting to grow up and take responsibility for himself. And the truth was he’d fucked up. He hadn’t been on his game lately. So how did he fix it?

He wanted a second chance with her, in more ways than one.

He rose and walked back into his office, dropping into his office chair. He logged in to the site so he could leave a message.

“Doc, what are you going to do?”

Chapter One

Whitewolf, Colorado, December 1905

“All the books have been shelved, Mrs. Kelly.” Lizzy Redwolf pinned on her hat. “With it being Friday night, you’d best be leaving shortly. You know how those men at the saloon can get.”

“Yes, I certainly do, Mrs. Redwolf.”

Abigail Kelly straightened her shoulders as she finished cataloging the newest books for the library. It wouldn’t be long until the noise of her nearest neighbors took over the night and brawls would spill out the doors and into the streets. So far she’d managed to avoid all of it.

All of it but the saloon owner himself. William Goldwolf made his disapproval of the new town library—and by extension, the new librarian—perfectly clear. The kindest thing he’d said was that the library was a waste of taxpayer’s money. Abigail fought her habitual scowl when thinking about that man. Unfortunately, she found herself thinking about him far too often.

“Well, now. I’m off to feed my husband and young’uns.”

“I’ll walk you out and lock up.” Abigail stood and took her keys off the ring at her waist. “Did you lock the back entrance?”

Lizzy stuttered to a halt and put her hand to her mouth. “Oh no. I’m sorry. I forgot.”

Abigail smiled and patted her shoulder. “I’ll get the door after I lock up the front. This is where all the rough types are, after all.”

“Right you are, and it’s early yet,” the other woman laughed, “Now, in an hour…”

“Just so.”

“Night, Ma’am.” Lizzy opened the door and headed out into the late afternoon sunlight.

“Good Evening.”

Abigail carefully adjusted the evergreen wreath hanging there, locked the door and tested it. The last thing she wanted was some hooligan coming in and spilling beer or worse, on her fine marble floors. She went directly to the rear entrance of the library and locked that door as well.

She’d leave by the back when she’d finished her business. The further she was from the saloon, the happier she’d be. Drunken men brought back unpleasant memories of her late husband. Drunk or sober he'd been charming, but when he was drunk he gambled and when he gambled, he lost. She hated having her hard earned wages lost to the turn of a card or the roll of the dice. In spite of it all, she missed him and she missed their loving even more. Just the thought of a man's strong arms around her caused her breath to catch and her body to tremble.

Abigail sighed, then set about tending the fireplaces, putting out fires and laying a new one for the morning. It was growing colder, and it had snowed that morning. She was used to snow, but not quite so much as fell in the mountains of Colorado. Christmas was less than a week away and the countryside looked like a painting. Peaceful. Beautiful. It would be her first all alone. She was pleased she’d accepted this position, but she wished for some friends to share her time.

She returned to the main desk and began to put away her work for the day. The cards she’d created for the card catalog would need to be filed in the morning and the new books shelved. So many things to do.

A battered snow-dusted hat landed on her desk and she jumped with a shriek. Her gaze flew upward. Straight into the ice blue eyes of William Goldwolf. She couldn’t contain her growl of exasperation.

“How did you get in?”

He dangled a key in front of her.

“I see. Well, good evening, Mr. Goldwolf. What brings you into this useless house of worship for slow minds?”

He chuckled as she quoted him verbatim from the last library board meeting. She still couldn’t understand why he’d been asked to be a member of the board. He didn’t support their mission to educate the citizenry. She'd yet to meet a more quarrelsome man and she utterly refused to acknowledge the thrill that went through her whenever they were in the same room.

A smile tilted the corner of his mouth as he sat down on her desk, knowing how she hated it. Abigail bit the inside of her cheek to keep from chasing him off her desk, aflutter like an angry wet hen. An epithet he’d used to describe her on more than one occasion. She clutched the back of her chair, hoping to keep her temper…this time.

“Maybe I want to check out a book, Mrs. Kelly.” She raised her brows but kept her mouth closed. Abigail could do without further provocation this evening. “Isn’t it your job to help me find somethin’, what did you call it? Ah yeah, improving to the mind,” He chuckled as he quoted her, eastern accent and all.

She clutched the chair harder because she refused to get into an argument with this man today. “I can recommend a number of possibilities. Perhaps the Bible might be fitting.”

“Improving to the mind, sure enough, but where’s the fun in that?”

“Fun?” Abigail's mouth fall open.

“Yeah, shouldn’t readin’ be fun?” He leaned over, set a single finger under her chin and pressed. She closed her open mouth and pulled her head away from his touch. Exasperating man! She would absolutely ignore that his touch had set her heart fluttering in a way she’d forgotten she could feel.

Jessica and Nathaniel Whitewolf celebrate their thirtieth anniversary as True Mates but they’ve lost their bond. Now a hot couples’ retreat will get it back.

Copyright © Francesca Hawley, 2017
Chapter One

She heard his step on the stairs and dished his bacon and eggs onto the plate. Right on schedule. Just like every morning. He walked into the kitchen and absently kissed her cheek as he sat down at the table. He ate neatly, as he always did.

Jessica Whitewolf watched her True Mate as he read the paper, his forehead knotted in thought. He’d been so focused on a case lately. One of his patients was late in a high risk pregnancy and he had been seeing her often so that she’d have a healthy pup.

Jess knew she shouldn’t feel jealous, the wolf bitch needed Nat’s attention. Sadly though, Jess couldn’t remember the last time her Mate focused so keenly on her. She fought the envy down and choked it off, wishing the best for the expectant mother.

“What are your plans today?” she asked.

Jess could almost predict what he’d say even though they rarely used their True Mate telepathic bond anymore. He’d talk about spending the day at the clinic and checking on his special case. Then he’d get up, give her a quick kiss and tell her he’d see her tonight.

“It’s a clinic day. I’ll be slammed all day with office visits.”

“Any interesting cases? How is Missy Goldwolf doing?”

“Missy?”

Jess smiled. Nat was a stickler about confidentiality. “She’s pregnant. She’s had a difficult pregnancy and everyone in the entire valley is holding their breaths hoping she’ll carry to term. It isn’t hard to figure out, honey.”

He rose and crossed the room. “I suppose not. She’s holding her own. I’m just glad that Yohana approved the upgrade to the obstetrics and neonatal units at the hospital.”

“Well, considering she’ll need it soon herself, it was a no-brainer for the council.”

“She didn’t know that at the time it was approved, but my thanks to the council,” Nat smiled and gave her a wink since Jess was part of that civic body. “I better go. See you tonight, right?” He kissed her cheek, picked up his briefcase and headed for the front door. Jess followed.

“The kids sent cards.”

“Hmm?” he asked absently as she followed him.

“Anniversary cards,” she hinted. “For us.”

“That’s nice.” He opened the door and left without turning around once. She watched him walk to the car and waved as he drove away. He didn’t wave back. She wasn’t even sure he’d seen her.

Jess sighed. When had this happened? When had they become so comfortable and…boring. She turned around and went inside to wash up in the kitchen before she headed over to her landscaping business.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, thanks to your generous donations we met our goal tonight. We’ll be able to fund two Honor Flights very soon.”
Everyone cheered. After all, this was the real purpose of the party.
“And now, that moment you’ve all been waiting for. Frank, please draw the name of our lucky winner.”
He reached in the bowl and stirred the tickets thoroughly before finally drawing one. “And my companion for the evening is…” he paused dramatically and looked out into the crowd with a grin. Then he looked down at the ticket and read, “Sharon Beryl. Are you here sweetheart?”
Shar froze while Jess squealed, jumping up and down. Everyone, including Frank thought Jess was the winner.
“Well, come on up.” He waved to her. Jess shook her head and grabbed Shar’s arm, dragging her toward the well-guarded staircase on the far right side of the stage. The guards tried to stop her, but Jess yelled.
“This is Sharon, you twit. Not me.” Jess turned and hugged her. “You won. You won!”
“But, how?” Sharon could barely talk; she was so shocked.
“I bought a lot of tickets and put your name on them. Now go on and have fun.” Then Jess leaned close to whisper, “And tell me if he kisses as good as he looks.”
The guards escorted her up onto the stage and Frank crossed to her.
“Sharon?” he asked softly. She nodded. He took her hand and drew her forward to a padded stool that now sat center stage. She awkwardly climbed up on it and settled her skirt, so she was modestly covered.
“This one’s for you, sweetheart.”
The band began to play and he looked into her eyes to sing, Where or When. One of her favorite classic ballads. She stared into his dark eyes and he smiled at her. Leaning close, he cupped her cheek in his hand as he sang to the howls and catcalls of the audience. She barely noticed them as she felt the warmth of his hand.
His touch zinged through her, strangely familiar. Just as she recognized his scent. He finished the song with a kiss on her cheek, but she got a weird feeling he’d wanted to kiss her lips. She had to be making it up. Wishful thinking again. Still, she got to see the rest of the concert from the best seat in the house.
He sang more standards that she loved, and he surprised her by making her part of the show. He continued to serenade her at times, and every time he winked at her she grinned like a silly love-struck girl. Before long, her cheeks hurt from all the smiling. She looked out into the crowd and found Jess, who waved. She laughed, then turned back to watch Frank.
During a band interlude, he pulled her off the stool and danced with her. When he started to sing again, she would have returned to the stool but he held her close. Normally, she was a total klutz, but in Frank’s arms she moved with grace. Maybe he knew how to lead, or maybe she was just floating on air. Whatever the reason, they moved like they’d been born to dance together. This couldn’t be happening to her. Yet it was. If only for one night, Frank Jasper was hers.

Five years ago, Brook’s tarot reading and dream premonition predicted his lover’s death so he left to protect her. On the morning of his cousin’s wedding, Delia and Brook meet again. Will their reunion bring love or danger?
*Published in a previous Naughty Literati anthology.*

Excerpt:

Delia Heath took a deep breath as she walked toward the home of the Linden clan from a large, roped-off parking area. If this joining ceremony was for anyone but Mary Linden, she would have found a way out. But Mary was one of her dearest friends in spite of the fact that she worked for Brook, Delia’s ex.
Guests laughed and chattered as they made their way around the house to the grounds in back where the ceremony would be held. She wanted to mingle with them, but unfortunately she couldn’t because she was part of the joining party. After smoothing her skirt carefully, she steeled herself for the inevitable and braced herself to face him. Brook Linden. The love of her life. The man who’d walked away over a tarot reading and a premonition. She frowned. They could have faced any challenge together, but he’d unilaterally decided she needed protecting so he’d left. Damn macho idiot.
The door opened as she reached up to knock. Speak of the devil and he appears. Why did he still have to be so gorgeous? He stood a couple inches over six feet tall, with well-muscled broad shoulders. He wore navy pants and a sky blue open-necked shirt. She could see a hint of his chest hair which she’d always loved running her fingers through. She forced her gaze back to his face so she wouldn’t stare at his narrow hips and hard abs. There were a few more lines on his tanned face, but his masculine beauty was still there. His full lips curved and his green eyes with impossibly long lashes, framed by straight black brows warmed as he took her in.
Even now, after five years, she still felt her body react to him. Her nipples beaded painfully and her pussy clamped on a thick cock that wasn’t there. She raised one of her brows, waiting for him to say something. Anything.
“Delia? Lord and Lady, is it really you?”
“Brook, who’s there?”
Mary’s call distracted him long enough that he stepped back and Delia slipped into the house, ignoring him. She walked over to Mary and enveloped her in a hug.
“I’m so glad you made it. I was worried I’d have to find another bridesmaid.”
Delia grinned at the tiny, dark haired dynamo. “And suffer your wrath? Never.”
“It’s so good to see you. Did you have a good trip? Couldn’t you have come sooner?”
“I was working on a commission that was due yesterday.”
She smiled, not bothering to say she had no intention of arriving any earlier than she had to. Nor did she intend to stay any longer than she had to either. The less time she spend in close quarters with Brook Linden the happier she’d be. Her feelings for him still stirred beneath the surface and she didn’t want to get brushed off again. It would hurt too much if he didn’t want her.

Chapter One

Vivid. He nearly choked on his soda water as she walked in the door. Everything about her was vivid. He couldn’t decide if she was dressed for the Halloween party, or if her retro style was just her. Her curled black hair was 1950s glam. Everything else she wore fit the style, from her jeweled, pink-framed cat-eye glasses, to her puffy pink fifties-style party dress, to her coordinating stilettos. Her nails and lips matched the pink of her dress and shoes. She paused as if on a runway, waiting for everyone to see her.

While she paused, she scanned the room until her eyes finally lit on Jed Brownbear, the owner of the Alpha/omega BDSM Club for shapeshifters in Denver, who was sitting in the seat opposite him. Her face lit up and she shrieked, waving her arms. Jed grinned.

Scott Whitewolf blinked as every head turned at her screech. She did a funny little dance then launched herself across the room. He had no idea how the hell she ran on those stilts, but she did it.

“Big Daddy Grizzly! I’ve missed you!” she cried as she threw herself onto Jed’s lap and into his arms.

She planted pink kisses all over his bearded face. He caught her close in a hug, flipped her onto her belly and smacked her bottom five times, damn hard. She giggled and wiggled. Jed flipped her back over and she kissed his lips then his nose.

“Did you miss me?”

He laughed. “How could I not, you bad girl?”

“When I’m good I’m very good, but when I’m bad I’m better,” she laughed, quoting Mae West.

“Too true, little girl.” She pulled her lipstick and mirror out of her clutch to quickly and efficiently fix her lips. “So how did your last job go?” he asked.

“Fab. A plus model in Italian Vogue, can you believe it?”

“I can. You’re a stunner.”

“Thanks.” She smiled, yet took the praise as her due.

Scott set down his soda water, and her twinkling dark eyes turned to him. He felt like he’d been punched in the gut. If someone had set out to create his fantasy female, she would be it. Granted, the candy pink was a bit over the top. He’d prefer her in a more conservative pastel, but those lips. Those eyes. Jeez, she had the most elaborate cat eye make-up under those glasses of hers. Her body was rounded in exactly the right places. Her full breasts rose from a lacy deep v-neckline with a pink corset below her bust that cinched her waist. Below the bustier was a lacy pink confection of a skirt.

“Who’s your friend?” she asked.

“Beck Blackwolf, meet Scott Whitewolf.”

She tilted her head and raised her pink-lace-clad hands up to her glasses, lowering them just enough to see over the top.

“Hiya.”

“Hello Ms. Blackwolf.”

“Just Beck.”

“Beck, then.”

He lifted the water, tipped it toward her in a toast and took a drink. Her name sounded familiar but he wasn’t sure why. This was definitely a female who left an impression. She blinked once. Then her lips slowly started to curl. She winked and pushed her glasses back up. His cock rose to attention like it was tied to a string.

“Cool as a cucumber, aren’t you?”

“So, I’ve been told,” he agreed.

She turned to Jed and tilted her head toward Scott. “Is he the one?”

“Beck…” Jed rumbled.

“He is!” She bounced and he almost winced in sympathy. If Jed was as hard as he was, a bouncing bottom could hurt and hamper an otherwise pleasant evening.

“I am what?”

“You’re the wolf everyone calls Mr. Icehole.”

His brows raised and he let out a single bark of laughter. He knew they called him that but no one had ever said it to his face before. She twisted on Jed’s lap to face him and placed her elbows on the table. She set her chin on her hands giving him a glimpse of heaven in the mounds she put on display. That was some vision of cleavage. What male wouldn’t want to bury his face between her breasts to kiss and lick every inch?

“Why?”

“Why what?” He raised his brows at her question.

“Why do they call you that?”

“You already said why – cool as a cucumber.”

“That fits the Mr. Iceman moniker, but Mr.Icehole? That’s a whole different thing altogether.”

He fought to keep his lips immobile. Fought. Usually this wasn’t an effort at all. He rarely if ever smiled. But she had him amused twice in as many minutes. She certainly had his attention.

Chapter One

“Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our next contestant this evening. This sexy lady runs a dance studio here in the cities, so she can teach you to dance hot enough to melt snow in January. Please welcome Miss Diana DeFox!”

The lights dropped to nothing as the guitar downbeat of Dirty Diana rang out. Gunnar Thorson groaned and rolled his eyes at his cousins, fellow judges, and club co-owners Andy, Livvy and Stig Larson. This was the third rendition of Dirty Diana so far tonight. He just prayed this dancer fared better than the first two.

Livvy leaned close. “I know this one. She’s good.”

“It can’t be worse than the others,” Gun said.

“Are you sure?” Andy asked. Stig just laughed.

So, would she be dressed like MJ or the groupie, he wondered, as he debated cutting these amateur nights once again. The problem was they always drew a crowd. Whether it was the students just barely of age, the capable dancers or the awkward first timers, they always brought their own cheering section and the way the room erupted, this one had brought her fans in plenty. At least fans drank well.

A spot dropped on her and he smiled. She faced away from the crowd but her head was turned to the side with just a hint of her profile visible. She had the fedora and the sparkly glove, but that’s where the imitation of MJ ended. The rest of her costume was pure Mae West. The white glove extended up her arm and her black silky gown skimmed and hugged her abundant curves with a sweet slit up one side. She wore strappy black stilettos and moved with a confidence that set him on fire. Ladies without any confidence in their beauty made him sad, mad, and tired, all at once.

Her arms raised. Her body shimmied. She took her time to entice. When she reached behind her back and removed the glove, his breath quickened. He could imagine holding her hands in place while he removed the gown himself. When she threw the glove and spun, he expected to see her face, but she kept it hidden. All the more intriguing. She leaned against the first pole, hugging it and knelt, then as she stood, she rocked her hips against the pole. She made it sexy, not vulgar. Totally old school. She flipped around and slid down the pole, snapped her thighs apart, closed and then rose.

Teasing. Hinting. Still he couldn’t see her face and her hair was tucked up under that hat. He was starting to hate the damn hat. He wanted to become Master Thor and climb onto the stage and take her for himself. There was only one other woman in his life he’d ever felt that way about—Diana Räv. But this could not be the same woman. His Diana had never strutted in her life. She was ashamed of her curves. Thought she was fat and ugly. Never knew why he chose to date her because he was so pretty and she thought she wasn’t. The capper was that she would only make love with the lights off. He was a visual guy and liked to watch. This could not be his Diana.

But he wished it was. He watched her grip the pole with confidence and fly around it with grace. Her weight didn’t matter. To him it increased the sex appeal. Full breasts and big butts were his wheelhouse and she had ’em.

Livvy leaned close. “You look like you’re going to go grab her and carry her off stage,” she teased.

He glanced at her, barely, before turning his attention back to the stage. She let out a low whistle. “Well, I hope she knows what she’s about.”

“Who?”

Livvy shrugged then chuckled, returning her gaze to the stage to watch the rest of the performance, which was stellar. He’d hire Diana DeFox to dance here in a heartbeat but he had a strict no interaction policy with his dancers. Damn. He wanted to interact with her. Often. Therefore, he wouldn’t be hiring Miss DoubleD.

The rest of the dance played out with her flying around the pole. Finally, she strode forward and slid down the zipper on the side of her dress. She held it closed. Teasing the audience as she danced until they begged her to drop the gown. When she did, the reveal was worth the wait. Pale skin, pasties covering large areolas, rounded belly, ample thighs and when she turned, his cock popped to attention. Now that was an ass! Heart shaped and spankable. He couldn’t prevent himself from whistling. His cousins nudged him because judges were supposed to appear impartial. He was not impartial. No fucking way.

He wanted that. Right the fuck now. Instead, he clapped with the crowd as she finished and he cursed the damn hat. It hadn’t fallen off. She hadn’t taken it off. Nothing. He’d expected a reveal, but she knew what she was doing. Hiding her face tantalized the crowd. It sure worked with him.

True Mated Romance by Francesca Hawley

Do you enjoy books about shapeshifting wolves? I do. I also love writing about them. Finally, all my books are mine again and they I'm making them available to readers.

I created a fictitious town in Colorado that is the home to my shapeshifters.. Whitewolf, Colorado is a community/pack of slightly over 1000 people, however it is the nexus for the Feldspar (witch) family, the Drew Goldwolf and Kincaid Redwolf packs, and the Whitehawk and Goldowl aeries. The Feldspar family is a group of 100-200 interrelated humans who have settled together. The Feldspars are part of a long line of magic users descending from the druids. The wolf packs house mini-towns of approximately 500 each and each of the aeries also numbers approximately 500. The Whitehawks and Goldowls jointly operate a ski resort in the mountains above Whitewolf within the county.  That makes about 3200 individuals living in and around Whitewolf, Colorado. Each of the individual groups operates autonomously, but all participate in life in the town of Whitewolf. All live within the county limits of Whitewolf. All children from the various communities attend Whitewolf schools.

Whitewolf is located in a mountain valley in the upper foothills of the front range of the Rockies, slightly north of Denver. The valley is surrounded by four distinct foothills or low mountains, one in each direction. Exactly 4 roads lead in and out of the valley and run between each of the mountains which border the valley. The Whitehawk and Goldowl aeries are located on the mount the furthest to the west and at the highest elevation to accommodate the ski resort. The Redwolf clan is on the south mount, the Goldwolf clan on the north mount, and the Feldspar family live on the east mount.

Whitewolf has become a draw to shapeshifters living in the area because they don’t have to hide who and what they are from people in their community.  The land in and around the valley is owned by the Whitewolf clan. Members of the clan own their own homes and property, but any undeveloped space is held by the pack leader. If anyone sells their property to move out of the area, it has to first be offered to the Whitewolf pack leader for purchase or approval of buyer. No land changes hands in the city limits of Whitewolf without the pack leader’s approval.
The only humans in the area are the Feldspar family who are practicing witches and are fully magical (spell-casting, etc.) Despite its small size the town aspires to be independent so that they don’t need to worry about humans becoming frightened of them.

Town structure

Mayor/City Administrator (Pack leader) – Yohana Whitewolf (formerly her sire, Jeremiah)
The City Council is made up of four city folk and one representative of each of the neighboring groups for a total of 8. The council can recommend, but may not override a mayoral veto, since the mayor is the Whitewolf pack leader. The Mayor has the full power of both the position of Mayor and that of City Administrator. County business is handled by City Council as the county is small and is the area of the valley, the four mounts and about five miles in each direction.

He wasn’t here and he’d been the idiot who’d let “Billy the Kid” McCarty in the employee entrance.

Billy. The epitome of a frenemy – best friend and worst enemy – and the owner of rival restaurant, Fucile da Caccia - Italian for “The Shotgun”.
