Excerpt:

Royal Marine garrison, San Juan Island, 1 December 1869

There is an aching in my heart which I barely understand. An emptiness, a void made more bleak by winter’s burgeoning desolation.

It began when Gideon left.

A man…there have been times when a man has incited a spark of passion within. Always have I buried that desire, restraining the urge to act upon it. To do so is essential. Society finds love between two men aberrant.

But Gideon has affected me in a new and exciting way. I could not restrain myself.

And I do not regret it.

Our attachment is an unlikely one: I a soldier for the crown, he a free-spirited American adventurer. He was here merely visiting. I would not be here if it were not for this “war”—although the epithet is unwarranted. Since the occupation of this island began, there has been little antagonism. It is a border dispute, not a philosophical battle between our two nations. We British are cordial to the Americans and vice versa. At times, this good rapport develops into genuine friendship.

Yet, to form such a deep connection as Gideon and I have is extraordinary.

And for this yearning for his company to burn inside me is exceptional. Never before has the absence of a man caused such a hunger.

But what if Tilda were to find out? Would she doubt I love her as well?

Braxton Thorne rested his pen next to the inkwell and stared at the words drying on the open page of his journal.

Good God. What if Tilda found out? She had bemoaned his spending time with Gideon to the detriment of spending time with her. Might she suspect something unnatural fed upon him driving his need to be with the American?

Would she report him to his commanding officer for immorality?

No. Surely Tilda understood the flush of excitement with a new friendship. And she had been there the day they met…

Septimus has to learn why no female weres have been born into his pack. When he walks into the meeting room he smells his mate. A male.

Genre/Theme:
M/M Romance, Magic, Werewolves

Copyright © Berengaria Brown, 2016

Septimus had sometimes wondered if he’d only ever been sexually attracted to other males because there were so few younger females in his pack, and the few there were didn’t light his fire. But the minute he walked into the meeting room with the weres from the Forest Hill pack, he knew he was genuinely, one hundred percent gay. He could smell his mate.

His cock stood up and fought to get out of his jeans, stretching the fabric so tight that he was going to have blue balls for a week. The tiny hairs on the back of his neck were also standing straight up. His skin tingled, electrified with sexual arousal. And the scent of his mate was overpowering him, dragging him into the room with almost physical force.

His nose led him unerringly to his mate—a tall, lean man of about thirty, with tanned brown skin, dark brown hair, and liquid chocolate eyes. Those eyes were staring at him, and the man’s strong nose was flared, smelling his scent. From the huge bulge in his pale cargo pants, the man was every bit as aware of him as he was of Mr. Tall, Tan, and Delectable.

As Septimus walked across the room, his cock leading the way, the man moved to meet him. Their gazes were locked, and Septimus was totally oblivious to everyone else in the room and the task he’d been sent to do. He was about to put out his hand when the other man reached him and grabbed his shoulders, pulling him in for a hard, body-blending hug.

“I’m Dai. We’re mates.” The words were harsh, bitten off, said almost as a challenge.

“Septimus. I know.”

The Alpha of the Forest Hill pack stood just a few feet away. He coughed, cleared his throat, then said, “Gentlemen, let’s get this meeting underway. Dai, you should sit next to Septimus, not in your usual place.”

So even the Alpha smelled their attraction. That certainly proved he was not being misled by his cock.

Excerpt:

Newcastle, England
April 1879

Professor Edward Ockham gripped the ratchet handle more tightly as a frisson of lust roiled within. Before him his lovely assistant Delia Bennett awkwardly adjusted herself in a swing suspended four feet above the linoleum, her skirt and petticoats in riotous disarray. She was charming in her helplessness. Her arms, secured by leather wrist cuffs, stretched above her head. Her stocking-clad legs, extended and splayed, were held in the air by silken slings supporting each ankle and knee. Her rosy cheeks and bemused expression were slightly at odds with the bizarre eroticism of her predicament.

“Delia?”

The sound of her name tripping off his tongue echoed like a melody in the cavernous laboratory, the gentle hiss and thrum of the boiler adding a syncopated undertone.

Delia. No longer the more formal Miss Bennett during working hours. She was, by agreement, Delia.

He could say her name over and over and over again. Delia, Delia, Delia.

Her chocolatey eyes widened. “Yes, Profess—Edward?”

Edward. She was Delia and he was Edward.

“Are you comfortable?”

She wriggled her buttocks, each pillowy cheek cradled in its own sling leaving her quim exposed to the air. “Perhaps something across my bum, you know, a bolster above the crack—” She suddenly blushed crimson to the roots of her raven curls.

The door to the laboratory swung open with a dramatic flair.

“Well, well, well. What have we here?” Sebastian Broadchurch sauntered in from the hall, a little rumpled from whom and whatever he had done the night before. He stopped before Delia, his predatory stare traversing her as he combed his fingers through his flaxen hair. “Our Miss Bennett finds herself in yet another delicious quandary.”

“Good morning, Sebastian.” Edward arched a brow. Morning had but a minute left to it.

Sebastian brandished a scowl before turning his attention to the rigging holding Delia. He pursed his lips as he studied the mechanism. His gaze followed the silken slings upward to where they attached to a swivel bolt mounted to a cable. He perused the cable to where it connected to a system of belts and pulleys housed on a sturdy wooden frame. He glanced at the diminutive steam engine then grunted in comprehension as he took in the exposed gear shaft and long ball-end lever of the control box.

“It spins, does it?” he said.

“It does,” replied Edward.

Blurb:
There is no love lost between the Glass Spinners' Guild and the Tavern Keepers' Guild. For Ian and Zane, it means they can never be together, or risk losing everything.

Genre/Theme:
Fantasy, M/M, magic, guild

Copyright ©Terry Rissen, 2016

Excerpt:

Arcs of molten glass steamed in the damp morning air as Master Glass Spinner Ian Etheridge directed them from the crucible into the new mold. He preferred working freeform, but a commission was a commission, even if it was tedious. Master Tavern Keeper Zane Tandy wanted a gross of goblets for his restaurant and was willing to pay for the prestige of having a master glass spinner make them. They would have been a fraction of the price had he simply gone to the Guild and ordered them there. Any halfway competent senior apprentice could make flawless goblets, but Tandy was adamant. He wanted a Master’s mark on the stems. No, he wanted Ian’s mark on the stems…and no apprentice was to touch them.

And Ian welcomed any commission from Tandy. From Zane. It was one of the few socially acceptable ways they could interact. While there was no official barrier between them being friends, Ian couldn’t be just friends with the man he loved. Zane had said much the same to him in their youth. But as neither of them were from wealthy families, membership in their respective Guilds was more important than who they loved. In public they argued and seemed to barely tolerate each other. It was, in its way, a courtship of sorts, but not one anyone else would recognize.

So Ian had charged him five times the going rate. Who would ever think he was in love with, or even liked Zane if he gouged him at every turn? He’d registered his master’s mark as a work of art in and of itself, and no matter how much they hated it, the Board hadn’t been able to find a reason to overrule him. That let him set his own bastard’s bonus without the Guild getting their fingers into his coffers. Ian would still give a generous portion to the Guild, specifically to the Apprentice Hall. Not even Leo, the most obstreperous of the Guild Elders, could do anything if he was always generous to the Guild, despite distributing his largess on his own terms.

Leo had never let anyone forget he himself had been presented to the Wizards’ Guild as a youngster. He postured and preened, focusing on the invitation rather than the fact that he’d failed in his first year and been sent home.

Ian, too, had been presented, but he’d always wanted to be a glass spinner, so at the tender age of nine, he’d declined the Wizards’ Guild’s offer. He’d dreamed of working the red hot streams for as long as he could remember, and the day he’d been accepted as a Guild apprentice had been the happiest day of his life—until he got his Master’s mark and opened his own shop. His mother had been so proud. She’d also been relieved since he wouldn’t be spinning her goblets into bird’s nests or spider webs or any of the other fanciful, beautiful, yet useless shapes his heart desired.

Ian checked the cooling spells on the mold. This was apprentice-level work, but Tandy was paying and even though it irritated him, Ian couldn’t deny the value of staying in touch with the basics of his craft. It didn’t hurt to have his own apprentices see him doing even simple tasks. Nothing that came out of his shop could be less than perfect. Once apprentices got over the shock of seeing a master doing menial tasks, creating work-a-day objects with the same attention to detail he applied to one-of-a-kind pieces, they started down the path of true mastery of the craft.

He sealed the shelf holding the mold and moved to yesterday’s pouring. Ian began releasing the spells that held the glass in the mold, and then one by one, he began to remove the dozen delicate looking goblets and set them on the work bench.

He’d set the fifth one down when the musical chime on the door sounded, and then Malik, his newest apprentice, spoke. He couldn’t tell what was said, but he didn’t need to.

Zane Tandy had arrived and despite Ian’s iron control while he worked, his breath caught for a moment and butterflies took up residence in his stomach.

Every morning when he unmolded the new goblets from the day before, Tandy showed up before he finished. He said he wanted to see them as soon as he could, then he’d watch the apprentices pack them—his only concession to Ian. Once packed, he’d pay Ian for that portion of the commission, nod stiffly, and leave, Tandy’s apprentice in tow with the box of goblets.

Today he would pick up the fifth pouring. Ian paused, the goblet in his hand glittering in the sunlight streaming through the workroom windows. Yesterday was the unmolding of the fourth pouring, and Tandy had arrived as he’d removed the fourth goblet. He wondered if Tandy had a spy in his shop, tipping him off about when Ian started the unmolding. Ian smiled as he set the fifth goblet next to its fellows.

“Bright Morn, Master Spinner.” Tandy entered the workroom with the same gravity and grace that he always did. Ian continued his work, carefully releasing the sixth goblet from its mold and setting the surety spell to keep it from breaking for years to come. While he didn’t mind charging a bastard’s bonus when he deemed it warranted, he did feel he might have overdone it in this case. The least he could do was give Tandy his money’s worth. It cost him nothing, especially since he had no desire to accept or refuse another such menial commission. Once was enough.

“Bright Morn, to you, Master Tandy,” Ian replied. He focused on his work. Release the spell, raise the goblet, inspect it visually and magically, set it with the others if it was flawless. Ian hadn’t produced a flawed goblet in years. Teaching aside, he should be more annoyed by this odd commission than he was. He knew why he wasn’t, but he didn’t want to deal with the reason.

Zane Tandy was out of reach and always would be. The Guild would have his hide if he courted a Master of Tandy’s Guild.

And that was the short and long of it. On the surface, he and Tandy had a somewhat adversarial relationship. Tandy would commission all sorts of things from Ian, and insist Ian produce them all by himself. Ian, for his part, would dine at Tandy’s restaurant, insisting that Tandy prepare all the dishes and deliver them to Ian’s table. Ian would be both grudgingly impressed and mildly offensive in his praise. Tandy would graciously accept it and blame inferior workmanship in the kitchen and tableware for any perceived deficiencies. All of which had been made by Ian.

It was not by accident that Tandy had named his establishment The Glass House.

But always they kept each other at arm’s reach. Ian was “Master Spinner” in his shop, “Master Etheridge” in Zane’s restaurant. Only in the privacy of his own mind could Ian use Zane’s given name. In public he had to be “Master Tandy” or “Tavern Master” in his own place.

“Does the pouring meet with your approval, Master Tandy?” Ian carefully kept his eyes on his own work and his mind out of the rabbit hole of regret.

“It appears adequate thus far, Master Spinner,” Tandy replied. Ian glanced over his shoulder to see Tandy holding up one goblet to the light. Rainbows danced around the room as he turned the glass. “Quite adequate, Master Spinner.” He set the goblet down, releasing it with a gentle stroke over Ian’s mark. Tandy met Ian’s eyes for a brief, heated moment, then his usual taciturn manner reasserted itself and he stood tall and self-contained, his hands clasped behind his back.

“If you would care to sit, I could have a chair brought to you,” Ian set the eighth goblet on the workbench as he spoke.

“Do you think me so feeble I cannot stand for a time?” Tandy sounded mildly amused.

“I think you a guest in my workroom,” Ian said, “an unannounced guest, but a guest nonetheless.” Ian fell into their typical mild sniping with practiced ease.

How did it get to be December?

How did it get to be December? I swear it's only August. I just blinked and boom I hear Chicago singing Jingle Bell Rock on the radio! Hate it when that happens. Not hearing Chicago, but having the end of the year rush toward me so fast I feel like I'm driving Doc Brown's DeLorean.

One thing about December, though, is it's time for me to take stock in what I've accomplished this year. I wrote and published two stories with the Naughty Literati. Blue Plate Special came out in Naughty Flings and then Moon Dance made its first appearance in Naughty Escapes. I'd intended to have a new story in that universe ready for Naughty Reunions but the story just didn't pan out. Nothing wrong with the story itself just that it didn't fit the theme and trying to make it fit nearly broke my brain. I've been ripping out all the seams and rewriting it properly. I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be ready for the first anthology of 2016. So far it's had more names than Liz Taylor. At the moment I'm thinking of it as The School Teacher and the Rock Star. We'll see if that sticks. As for next year's Naughty Literati releases, we've got some great themes in store for 2016.

I really wanted a story in Naughty Reunions. That is a kickass anthology, as is Naughty Chances which released this month. I'm constantly blown away by the talented writers who make up the Naughty Literati. Sharing a table of contents with any of these authors is a high honor.

I also wrote and sold two stories to Dreamspinner Press this year. Lodestone is an m/m, science fiction paranormal story. I'm dying to get more of Alchemy and Nicholai's story out there. I love the universe and have another story, with different characters, underway, but it's a long one and may not even see submission until sometime next year. My other Dreamspinner release is The Stonemason in the Bare Studs anthology. That was one of those stories that seemed to write itself…while at the same time I sweated blood getting it out. It's also a rare, for me, standalone.

2015 has been a bit of a mixed bag for me. I launched Yet Another Penname (that would be Terry), moved, started three new universes, got bogged down in a story, broke free, sold to a brand new to me market, started ghostwriting (it's so much fun!) and have edited a few terrific novels that I wish I'd written. There have been many ups and downs, but I think the ups outweigh the downs.

I have plans for 2016, and if even half of them come to fruition, I'll have some terrific stories for you.

Hope you all have a lovely holiday season, no matter what you celebrate, or if you celebrate nothing at all.

Keep calm and read!

NaNoWriMo 2015 Winner! by Regina Kammer

Once again I am a NaNoWriMo Winner!

This was my 10th year participating in National Novel Writing Month. I wrote the foundations of The Viscount and the Veteran: An American Federalist Tale, the follow-up novel to The General’s Wife: An American Revolutionary Tale.

If you can't wait until The Viscount and the Veteran is completed, edited, submitted, and published and need your bisexual male/male romance fix now, I've got you covered with "Winter Interlude: An American Revolutionary Novelette" my story in The Naughty Literati's Naughty Chances: Take A Chance On Romance. "Winter Interlude" is a companion piece to The General’s Wife: An American Revolutionary Tale, delving into the relationship between Captain Samuel Taylor and Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton.

So what did I learn this year during NaNoWriMo 2015?

- It’s always best to end a day’s writing session with notes about what comes next.
Corollary comment: It is so great when the writing flows and a scene comes together, characters are changed, plot moved forward. But the previous night’s victory is dampened by the looming realization the next morning that, OMG, you have no idea what happens next.

- I really, really, really need to tamp down the inner editor. I try to by putting stuff I need to research or edit in [square brackets] and forgetting about it. It doesn’t always work.

- I am a combination of plotter and pantser: perhaps the word is “plotser” or “pantster”. But I do need that next-morning crutch of what comes next. So the pantser needs a plot plan, even if that plot plan is formulated a minute after the pantsing has finished.

- 50,000 words is basically a really detailed outline.

- I learn the same lessons year after year. I really need to pay attention to my inner writer!

If you want to see how my November progressed on Twitter, I've captured the tweets on my blog.

I encourage everyone who has ever wanted to write a novel to take the National Novel Writing Month challenge. If you can't wait until November 2016, the same organization runs Camp NaNoWriMo in April and July. Your voice needs to be heard and your characters need to come to life!

Excerpt:
Blake stood and walked behind Xavier’s chair, resting his hands gently on Xavier’s shoulders, and then massaging them. Xavier felt his tight muscles loosen a little as Blake’s fingers dug into the tense tissues, working on the knots, Blake’s thumbs pressing and rolling into each bump.

Xavier rotated his neck and head, and then leaned forward, relaxing into Blake’s firm touch. “Hmm, that feels good.”

Blake moved his hands around, pressing and working all the stiff areas until there were no hard lumps left. His hands stilled momentarily before he slid them down Xavier’s back and up under his sweater and shirt. They glided over the taut back muscles, up Xavier’s spine and around over his sides, down, then up again. This time his fingers moved around to the solid chest wall.

Blake’s fingers stilled over Xavier’s nipples, the firm little discs already standing to attention.

Xavier stood, turned into Blake’s arms, and wrapped his own around Blake. “Maybe it’s time to move this party into the bedroom?” The two men were almost the same height, a mere fraction under six feet, so Xavier tilted his head to the side to kiss his friend.

The kiss was sweet and gentle, a brief butterfly touching of lips to lips, until Blake grabbed Xavier’s head and held it still so he could lick along the seam of Xavier’s mouth. As Xavier opened up, Blake’s tongue slid inside, teasing and tasting and testing. First along the insides of his cheeks, then behind his teeth, and finally to tangle and dance with Xavier’s tongue.

Blake’s fingers burrowed into Xavier’s black hair where it curled on his collar at the back of his neck.
Blake stroked the neck underneath the curls, angling the other man’s mouth more fully over his own, then sucked Xavier’s tongue into his own mouth.

When they finally drew apart, both men were panting, not just from lack of oxygen, but also from the power and passion of their kisses.

Blake pulled Xavier hard against him from hips to chest, his arms like steel bands around the other man. Their cocks rubbed against each other, two long, hard ridges, their heat obvious even through the layers of clothing. “Want you. Need you,” he whispered.

“Hell, yeah. I want you, too.”

Excerpt:
“I reckon the intelligence from Lieutenant Hawkins has kept you busy of late.”

Sam’s baritone filled the deafening void, shrinking the cozy space.

Pat blew out a smoke ring. “Yeah. He’s a funny one. Quiet, until something irks him. Then he just raves outrageously.” The hazy ring twisted and twirled in the air. “Charming accent, though. I could listen to him ticking off inventory entries for hours.”

Sam shifted his weight. “I didn’t know you found British accents so captivating.”

“I didn’t know either until Hawkins—”

Pat stopped. Sam’s comment wasn’t about Hawkins. “Maybe not so much the accent. Maybe it’s the rich masculinity of his voice I find attractive.”

Sam pursed his lips and stared at the floorboards again.

“Or the fact he looks a little like you. His hair the same brown,” Pat glanced at Sam’s disheveled queue, “although perhaps styled with less disarray.”

A rosy hue tinged Sam’s cheeks.

“His eyes are just a bit more gray than yours. Less blue.”

Sam lifted his gaze to meet Pat’s.

As he stood, Pat set his pipe in a small salt-glazed bowl on the desk. “He’s not much older than you. Perhaps twenty-seven.” He surveyed Sam from head to toe. “His body’s lean, vigorous, much like yours.”

Sam crossed his arms and looked askance.

Pat took two steps toward him and placed a hand on Sam’s forearm. “I have no interest in Hawkins,” he said gently, “and he has no interest in me—in men. Trust me. But I find a curious pleasure in being with him. I can only deduce it’s because I miss being with you.”

A bloom of color brightened Sam’s face. “You do?”

“I do.” Pat loosened the knot of Sam’s arms. “But what with training quartermasters to be soldiers, fighting a dogged enemy, and burying the dead, it’s been difficult to get a moment.” He took one more step forward.

Sam’s breath quickened in time to the thrum of Pat’s excited pulse. “You should get a promotion for taking over when I was injured.”

Pat reached for Sam’s hand. “I didn’t do it for rank, Sam. I did it for freedom and I did it for you.” Sam’s fingers were still cold despite his earlier attempt at warming them in the fire.

Sam flushed. “I don’t deserve you.”

A surprising thing to say given Pat’s perfidious behavior.

Sam must have seen the surprise on his face. “I’ve been a bloody fool for shutting you out, Pat. You’re the best friend I’ve ever had.”

Friends. Is that what they were? It felt like something decidedly more than that.
