Excerpt:

Ben propped himself up on his elbows to better see the naked woman beneath him. Sheened with sweat, Elena’s lush curves glowed in the reddish half-light of her bedroom, curtained in exotically patterned swaths of gauze and silk. A curl of smoke from a lit incense stick scented the air with sandalwood. Otherworldly New Age music flowed out of a boom box in the corner, irritating the hell out of him.
Elena’s bedroom was that of a gypsy witch, and despite the incredible sex he’d been having with her for a month, he wouldn’t allow himself to fall under her spell. Except for in the sack, she wasn’t his type.
They’d met through their kids, eleven-year-olds who’d attended the same summer camp. Now that camp was over, Ben was frankly grateful that Tom and Gina liked to hang out together, since they seemed to keep each other amused and out of trouble. As a single dad, finding activities for his son was tough. Ben hated to admit it, but he sometimes found that Tom was a distraction from his job.
Ben shoved everything extraneous out of his mind to focus on the beautiful woman he was inside. They were the same age—thirty-six—but Elena was nothing short of spectacular. She always wore an enormous topaz on a golden chain that dangled between her breasts. She claimed she focused her power through the jewel. Ben thought that was wacko, but didn’t care.
Too bad she was, literally, a card-carrying nut. He remembered the time she’d shown him her membership in the Northern California Church of Wicca. He’d concealed his smirk only because he wanted to lay her. And that had to be all, he admonished himself. He was a sheriff’s deputy, and couldn’t afford to have a permanent relationship with Elena Lautari. She wasn’t the kind of woman who fitted in with the rest of his life.
He tried to picture her drinking a beer with the other cops and their wives, and failed utterly.
“What?” she asked, running light fingertips up and down his sides, eliciting shivers.
“Whaddaya mean, what?”
“You looked as though you were ten miles away.” Her caress slowed. “I wonder what the kids are doing?”
“I think they went over to my place. They’re probably watching a DVD. It’s too hot to go outside and swim.”
“Who’s watching them?” Her voice sharpened.
“Aw, Elena, relax. They’re okay. They know what they can and can’t do.”
“Mmmm. Hope you’re right.” She reached for him, this time climbing on top. He wasn’t sure he was ready for another bout yet, but she knew exactly how to turn him on.
*****
Hot and dusty, Tom stood with Gina at the corner of 12th and J Streets in downtown Sacramento. Above him, the door of the Masonic Temple was set within a Gothic style arch made of peach-colored stone. The arch was high and pointed; on each side of the arch, a knight stood brooding, eyes downcast, hands folded over stony hauberks.
He ruffled his short blond hair, trying to cool his sweaty scalp, and glanced over at Gina, who clutched a sheaf of notes in one sticky hand. A basket lay on its side at her feet.
“Can’t we do this on an afternoon that isn’t a hundred-million degrees out?” Tom looked over at the thermometer/clock high on the side of the bank across J Street. It flashed 100 in dots at one second time intervals. As he watched, the number changed to 101, and the time to 3:19.
“We’re actually supposed to do this at midnight.” Gina pushed dark bangs off her damp forehead. “But we aren’t allowed out after dark. Besides, it’s dangerous downtown at night.”
“I know that. Why are we trying to do this if we can’t do this right?”
“You got a better idea?”
“Yeah. Let’s go to Vic’s and get ice cream.”
“We spent all our money on this stuff.” She nudged the basket with her toe. “We might as well go ahead with it. It won’t take very long, and then we can go over to your house and swim.”
He sighed. “Anything to drink in here?” He squatted down and emptied the contents of the basket onto the sidewalk.
“Careful, there’s glass in there. Hey, don’t drink that!” She grabbed a bottle out of his hand. “That’s yucky.”
“What is it?”
“Frog’s water.”
“Like frog pee? Eeewww.”
“Here.” She handed him a bottle of Snapple lemonade.
He drank before passing it back to her. After she’d taken a few gulps, she flipped through the notes and sorted the ingredients for the spell. “Lucky my mom and your dad are really into each other,” she said. “I could never have gotten into her spell book if she was paying attention.”

Excerpt:

“You shouldn’t be here, Doug. If Lowell sees you he’ll kill you. I’m not exaggerating. He has an entire closet full of guns.” Fern shivered. Lowell had shown her those guns any number of times, usually when she’d annoyed him and he wanted her to do better next time.
“He’s more likely to kill you. I’ve seen the bruises on your face. And during summer you didn’t once wear shorts. You used to wear shorts all the time. I’ve always loved watching you in those shorts. I bet your legs were bruised and that’s why you kept your jeans on.”
Fern shook her head. “I’m stupid. I make a lot of mistakes. Go away before Lowell gets back. Please. I don’t want him to hurt you.”
“See. That proves he’s bashing you. Real men don’t hit their women even if they do make mistakes. Anyway, I watched him go in the bar on Main Street. He’ll be there drinking with his buddies until midnight. This is your chance to get away, Fern. You have to leave him now before he breaks your bones and really hurts you bad. Come on. Come with me now.”
Fern wanted to. She wanted to so much she sank to the floor and shook even harder. But it wasn’t possible.
“He’s taken my ID, my driver’s license, my Social Security card, my passport. If I run away I’ll have no way of proving who I am and getting a job. I can’t leave him.”
“Of course you can leave him. You aren’t married to him, and even if you were, it’s illegal for him to take your ID from you. We’ll get it back or get you new ID. Whatever works. Just come with me, now, please. While Lowell is gone. This is our chance to be together again. I’ve never stopped loving you, never. I want to look after you. I want to wash all the bad times away and make your life full of happiness again.”
Fern sat on the floor shaking her head, tears trickling from her eyes. She’d been so stupid, so very, very stupid, to go with Lowell, to believe him. She’d been infatuated with the older man. Blinded by his nice new car, his beautiful home, his managerial position at the local bank. At first he’d showered her with pretty things, taken her to the best restaurants, been happy with her. But before long she’d started making mistakes, making him angry with her incompetence. But the more he got angry, the stupider she became, until all she did was get everything wrong. Doug would hate her too.
“It’s no use, Doug. I’m so stupid. I do everything wrong. I’m always making mistakes. You’d hate me in a few weeks, too.”
“No I won’t. I’ve loved you since the eighth grade. I’ll never stop loving you. And you aren’t stupid. You graduated school in the top ten in our class. Please come with me. Please let me look after you. I’ll protect you. I know where you can hide from Lowell until we get your paperwork sorted out. I’ll bring you food and everything you need until I can look after you in public. I want everyone to know I still love you and that you’re mine now.”
“You want me?”
“Of course I want you, Fern. I’ve always wanted you.”
“Even though—”
“Don’t keep saying you’re stupid. You’re not stupid. Once you’re away from Lowell you’ll get your confidence back and everything will be all right.”
Fern wanted everything to be all right again. She knew she’d never be happy with Lowell. That she’d never live up to his standards and demands of her. She’d known that months ago. If she was hidden so he couldn’t find her, if the police made him give back her ID, maybe it would be okay. She wanted so much to be with Doug again. He’d never made her unhappy the way she was now. Even when they’d argued he’d always forgiven her and he’d never once hit her or threatened her. She wasn’t stupid around Doug and even when things went wrong he was much more likely to laugh and joke about it than complain.
“I don’t know. I want to, but…” She slumped against the wall. “I already told you he took the door key with him. I can’t get out. The door is deadlocked.”
“What about this window we’re talking through? Can’t you open it and climb out? Or even break it.”
“He’ll be so angry if I’m not here when he gets back. That’s why he locks me inside. So I’ll be here for him.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s illegal, too. What if there was a fire? You’d have to get out then. Do any of the windows open?”
“Only the one in the bathroom.”
“Can you climb out of it? Or just break this one.”
“Let me look.” The bathroom window was high, but Fern had always been good at gym class. She stood on the side of the tub and pushed the window open as wide as it would go, then she gripped the windowsill and chinned herself up. There wasn’t enough room to turn around and exit feet first, so she slid through head first, but Doug caught her and lowered her to the ground.
“Let’s go. My car is just around the corner.”
“Where is this hiding place?”
“You’ll love it. It’s the disused electricity substation. Substation #69.
Fern hardly dared hope everything would be okay again, but she went with Doug, loving his warm arm tightly around her, his strong body beside hers. Already she felt safer than she had in months.

Excerpt:

thwack and a curse presaged Edward’s entry into the lab. He stumbled in from his office, bleary-eyed, his brown curls disheveled, his shirtsleeves rolled to the elbow. Whatever Sebastian had done to him last night or this morning—or both—had been clearly far too strenuous. Delia sighed. Sometimes all Edward needed was a cuddle.
He pawed through the drawers of the tool cabinet. “Seb, have you seen my—”
He glanced over his shoulder and froze, staring at Delia, his cheeks rosy under fine stubble, the color deepening as his gaze swept over her thighs.
He turned to face them. “Sebastian,” he asked, now seemingly mesmerized by Delia’s exposed knickers. “Whatever are you working on?”
Sebastian beamed. “I call it the Broadchurch Phalangical Restraint System.”
Delia rolled her eyes. How typical of Sebastian to name the invention after himself.
Edward scowled as he approached. “Is this for one of those clandestine establishments you frequent?” He ran his fingers over the segments of a metal hand, so tantalizingly close to the bare thigh above Delia’s stocking. He no longer blushed, instead his lips and forehead twisted in a thoughtful expression.
“Yeah,” Sebastian said. “Dominick’s.”
Edward’s pinky strayed to her inner thigh. A frisson of lust tore through her, melting her insides, like the ganache centers of the bonbons she had indulged in the night before.
Edward paled and snatched his hand away.
“Miss Bennett,” he said as if just noticing her. “Good morning.”
Delia’s heart pounded, no doubt sending blood to color her cheeks the same red as her frilly knickers. “Good morning, Professor Ockham.”

Be careful what you wish for—it just might come true. While Emily may have wished to be taken away, waking up on an alien cruiser, naked and intensely turned-on wasn’t what she’d had in mind.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Bells tinkled a merry greeting as the door of the Moonlight Diner swung open. Emily Baxter finished refilling the last salt shaker and glanced at the clock. Ten minutes until closing time and a new customer shows up. Great, she’d have to work late again.
Story of my freakin’ life.
With his brown hair sticking up in all different directions, white shirt buttoned haphazardly and one pant leg partially tucked into a sock, the man who’d walked in had a wild gleam in his glassy eyes. He had the lean, athletic body of a runner and when cleaned up was probably rather attractive.
“Aliens!” He pointed toward the back of the diner. “I was abducted!”
Okay, cleaned up and dried out, she amended.
Hank’s bald head appeared in the pass-through. “Aliens? Hey, did you get probed?”
“How’d you know?” The customer stumbled as he made his way toward the counter and dropped down onto a stool with a sharp hiss. “Did Calgon get you too?”
She glanced back at Hank, owner of the diner and her boss. One corner of his mouth drew upward into an evil grin Emily knew well. She’d been a victim of Hank’s bullying and her heart went out to the customer who thought he’d found a sympathetic listener.
“Calgon the alien took you away, huh?” Hank sputtered, barely getting the words out. “You’ve been watching too much TV, dude. Hey, Em. Better call the guys with the white coats. He needs a padded cell and one of those jackets with the really long sleeves.”
While Hank laughed and cracked jokes at the man’s expense, Emily set a cup of coffee in front of the customer and patted his arm. “Ignore Hank. Everyone else does.”
The second she went through the swinging door into the kitchen, Hank grabbed her arm and dragged her over to the grill, where he kept a close eye on the man who sat hunched over the steaming mug.
“That guy’s a total crackpot, Em. Don’t get close to him. Might rub off on you.”
“Insanity isn’t catching.” Jerking free of his hold, she punched Hank’s beefy tattooed arm. “But stupidity is,” she mumbled under her breath.
She understood Hank’s bully mentality—how making other people feel small gave him the false sense of being a big man. Still, understanding didn’t make dealing with him any easier. “You are such an ass! That man is obviously down on his luck and could use a little compassion.”
“Compassion?” Hank gave her a slack-jawed stare. “You’re crazier than he is.”
Emily sighed and shook her head. She preferred to believe everyone had some goodness in them, but Hank had proven himself rotten to the core, lacking any depth or virtue. A true lost cause.
The grill had been shut down and cleaned for the night but there was still a pot of soup simmering. She filled a bowl, put a couple of rolls on a plate and headed for the door, not surprised when Hank moved to block her path.
“That bum didn’t order anything and sure as hell won’t have the money to pay.”
“I’m not sending him back out on the street without a meal.” She couldn’t afford to lose her job but would make a stand on the issue if necessary.
“Okay, Sister Teresa, but you’re not giving my profits away.”
Emily shook her head. “You mean Mother Teresa, moron, and I’ll pay for the meal.”
Hank’s brow furrowed with confusion and disbelief shone in his dark eyes. “Must be paying you too much if you’ve got money to throw away on bums.”
Grinding her back teeth, Emily battled the urge to throw the soup in Hank’s cruel face. “The way you treat people is going to come back and bite you in the ass, Hank. It’s called karma. Because I’m kind and help others in need, one day when I’m down low, someone will offer me a hand.”
Hank’s riotous laughter had her hoping she’d be around to witness the day karma tore him a new one. Why did she continue to try to get through that thick skull of his? He would never see acts of kindness as anything other than signs of weakness. And having shown that weakness would make her a prime target for Hank’s brutality in the days to come.
So be it.
“Grow up, Hank. You’re not in grade school anymore.”
Emily not only fed the man, she listened to his tale about the aliens and their high-tech spacecraft. She mentally went over her mounting bills and declining budget as he detailed the aliens probing his rectum. She gave him bus fare to get home before showing him out and locking up the diner.
Her own commute was brief—out the back way and up a rickety flight of stairs to her rented room above the diner.
Stepping into the alley, Emily gazed up at the stars. As a child she’d dreamed of blasting away on the space shuttle to visit distant mysterious places. Her customer had insisted there were other forms of life out there, and as crazy as it may seem, she agreed. Considering all the planets in existence, so many more than humans were aware of, surely some of them were inhabited. To believe Earth harbored the only intelligent life would be rather arrogant and naïve.
The whole idea of being abducted and taken away in a spaceship actually sounded pretty damn good to Emily. No more working her fingers to the bone or fending off idiots like Hank. She’d travel to exotic locations and settle down when she found a culture where women were not only cherished but treated with respect as equals.
While the night sky was full of beautiful stars, one in particular captured Emily’s attention. It shined a bit brighter than the others, twinkled faster and appeared closer.
With the customer’s story still fresh in her mind, Emily held out her arms, reached toward the beacon of light and yelled, “Calgon, take me away!”

Between one heartbeat and the next, darkness shut out the stars, her body became weightless and rose into the air, and she drifted off into nothingness.

Selvya’s gift for controlling fire made her a weapon in the hands of unscrupulous men. The king’s commander offers a chance for revenge and redemption, but it’s a risk she’s not sure she can take. *Published in a previous Naughty Literati anthology.*

Excerpt:

Selvya sat cross-legged on the bare stone floor, hands extended, struggling to control the tiny flame that danced on her palm. Such a small flicker and yet so hard to get it to move. Once she’d managed huge conflagrations and even directed an enormous forest fire. Now she could barely make this little wisp shift. For the last twenty minutes she’d bent her will on it and only produced a few wiggles.

She channeled all her energy into it, letting the heat and crackle of the flame resonate in her brain. Up another inch, she directed. The flame didn’t exactly resist. It began to stretch itself out, climbing upward a little. But she couldn’t generate the mental force to fuel its growth more than half an inch. Her hands trembled with the effort and exhaustion threatened the little control she had. With a deep sigh, she shook her fingers and dismissed the flame.

“That was better than yesterday.”

She yelped and spun around on her rear. Jorden Corsos, Duke of Cartallia, sat on one of the two hard iron chairs in the room. She hadn’t heard him enter, though given how hard she’d been concentrating, it didn’t surprise her.

“How long have you been there?”

Her knees locked when she tried to stand. He extended a hand to help her up and again she experienced that odd, frightening, humming sensation when their palms met.

“Ten minutes or so.” He made no reference to whatever passed between them, and his expression didn’t change when he released her. “You’ve made some progress. Yesterday there was nothing.”

“I barely managed this. So tiny and it still took so much effort to control it.”

“It’s coming to you.” He stood up and went to the door, spoke a few words to someone there, then returned. “Can we go somewhere more comfortable? I’ve ordered a tea tray.”

She stared at him, bemused for a moment. “Of course.” What was he doing here? Checking up on her? Was he unhappy with her lack of progress? And why did her heart do a strange little flip-flop in her chest? She led the way to the next room, which served as a parlor. Padded chairs, a woven rug, a few tables, and shelves holding a variety of books made this a more relaxing space. He waited until she settled in one of the armchairs before he sat.

“Are you comfortable here?” He waved an arm around the room, encompassing this one and the other three rooms that made up the tower suite. “You’ve asked for very little.”

“And you’ve given me much more. The clothes alone…”

He smiled broadly. “Worth every pence. I still find it hard to believe you’re the same woman as the dirty, skinny, bedraggled creature I first met.”

“Fresh from the dungeon.”

“Even so. I’d never have guessed there was so much grace and beauty under all the grime.”

“You flatter, my lord.”

“Not a bit. The transformation is stunning.” He looked around. “You have all that you need?”

“At the moment, yes.”

“You’ve been able to call a bit of fire, I see, so your ability wasn’t completely burned out.”

She sighed. “Not all of it anyway. But what I can do is so limited now.”

He settled back in the chair. “Why is that, do you think?” He sounded curious but not worried. Because he didn’t want to seem to pressure her into too much effort too fast?

“I don’t know. I may have just used up every last bit of reserve I had when I did the fire for the young baron, and it will take time to restore it. Or perhaps creating that fire burned up whatever channels in my mind let me call and control the flame.”

“If that were true, you shouldn’t be able to create even the small spark you did earlier. Possibly what happened when you called that last flame was so horrible your mind rebelled and is blocking your attempts to do it again.”

She stared at him for a moment. From their first interactions, she’d known he was intelligent as well as handsome and high-born, but the depth of his understanding astonished her. “Yes, it’s possible.”

“It’s also possible that you’re now trying too hard. You’ve done nothing the last few days but work with the flame. You need to relax more.”

“You’ve had people spying on me?” Of course he did, silly. He’s invested a lot in you.

“The servers who bring your meals report back to me. You were already at work with the flame when they delivered the last two morning meals and still doing it at the evening meals.”

“You want the weapon I represent, and I want to have this war done with.”
