Haunting Stories
“The Ghosts at Substation #69”, my story in “Naughty Haunts: Eleven Spooky Love Stories”, is not the first time ghosts have featured in my writing. This time I began by being fascinated with a disused electricity substation near where I live. It is encircled with a hire barbed wire fence and a potholed gravel parking lot, but the outside walls of the old stone and brick building are heavily decorated with graffiti, so it’s clear not everyone is deterred by metal spikes.
That started me thinking about why it was abandoned and what it might be used for. And so a new story was born.
The first time a ghost entered my writing, he took over the book.
I was writing an MMF contemporary menage when my heroine ignored the book’s plot outline and discovered a secret stairway into a hidden room. Inside the room was the ghost. Needless to say my perfectly crafted plot outline went in the trash and the ghost took over. Of course Amos and Wesley were still determined to win Keziah, but as she’d already demonstrated, she has a mind of her own and John’s ghost was intent on joining in the fun. That book is called “Intensity”. (http://www.bookstrand.com/intensity )
A short time later I began writing a second book in that world, “Complexity”. I’d long intended to write a book with a woman who suffered from extreme asthma as the heroine. Tia’s life is far too complicated for her to consider a relationship no matter how delicious Finn and Simeon are. I suppose it was virtually inevitable that a ghost would turn up in that world, too. But back to “The Ghosts at Substation #69”. This is the story of a woman fleeing her abusive partner, her high school sweetheart who wants to rescue her. And not one, but two ghosts.
