The Artist
Charles Westerman, Victorian England’s most sought-after landscape painter, is finished with love affairs. Yet after a taste of forbidden passion at a private art exhibition, he knows he’s met his muse in Rosamund. Problem is she’s married. For the sake of his career, Charles simply cannot afford to be distracted by another disastrous entanglement, especially one with a married woman.

The Muse
Art curator Rosamund, Lady Threxton, needs a man to satisfy her predilection for spanking. Her husband, Jeremy, does not relish the role of chastiser and, besides, has his own mistress to please. Jeremy, however, is quite amenable to Rosamund seeking out another. Hired men from her favorite erotic club provide her with only a modicum of relief. The furtive fling with Charles, though, leaves Rosamund certain she’s found her perfect match.

The Arrangement
Rosamund and Jeremy’s marriage is curiously modern for stodgy Victorian society. Together, the couple try to entice Charles into an unusual arrangement. Will Charles risk the threat to his reputation to explore passions and proclivities he never knew existed—and discover desires he never knew he had?

Playing with History

There’s always a risk when setting your story in a real historical background that you can later find out events or people of the day might actually have a real history that contradicts what you’re trying to do.

When I wrote my Passions series of books back in the early years of this millennium (and doesn’t that feel weird?), I did a lot of research on England in the fourteenth century, including major events and the main historical characters of importance. Because I’d studied Medieval literature fairly extensively in college, I had a fair grasp of the events of the period, but I tried to double-check details.

I put a date on the first book in the series but not on the subsequent ones because I didn’t want to be tied to a particular year.  There was a lot going in 14th century England and I didn’t want to have to account for everything that might’ve happened in a year and how it would impact the characters and events. For the most part I’ve steered clear of using actual historical events and personages.

In my most recent release, Healing Passion, however, there are references to battle happening on the continent and a prince who is in charge. And there is a scene toward the end where the hero and heroine go to court and meet the king and prince.  I don’t name the king, though it’s not hard to figure out he’s meant to be Edward III, because I do allude to the prince present with him as the Black Prince.
Edward, the Black Prince, is granted Aquitaine by his father King Edward III. Initial letter "E" of miniature, 1390; British Library, shelfmark: Cotton MS Nero D VI, f.31
This picture is in the public domain.
And right there I take a couple of historical liberties.  First of all Edward of Woodstock, later Prince of Wales and Prince of Aquitaine, was not (as far as we know) ever referred to as the Black Prince while he was alive. The first written use of that name for him comes almost two centuries later. But I figured that there was likely a tradition that gave him that sobriquet well before that, possibly even during his lifetime.

The second was that from a young age, Edward spent most of his time on the continent, leading the English forces in what must have seemed like an unending war.  He was rarely in England until near the time of his death and even then he spent most of that time at his own estates, separate from the king’s.

Research for Binding Passion

The third of my Passions series of Medieval historical stories (and the second full-length novel) has just released. Like its predecessors, Daring Passion and Ruling Passion, Binding Passion features some BDSM, spanking, and domestic discipline. In that I think they are more true to their time than some recent novels set in the time period would have us believe.

In college I was fascinated by the Medieval period, so even though History wasn’t my major I took several courses about those times. And I’ve continued to read and study the period. I have an entire shelf of books on the period, focused particularly on the high middle ages, the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries, in England.

Because my son lives in England, I’ve had a number of opportunities to visit there. One of favorite things to do is tour castle ruins, restored castles, and museums attached or related to them. Most of them spend plenty of time relating the battles and sieges the castle or its residents took part in, the strategic importance of the place, and how it was defended.

But I find myself more interested in the small details of daily life. What people ate and drank, how the food and beverages were prepared, what they wore and how the fabric was made, the entertainment, stories, festivities, and how they spent most of their time are the things I try to learn from each visit.

One of the most fun bits of research I did for Binding Passion was to learn about Christmas festivities in the fourteenth century. That required extensive dips into books and searching through websites for the details to bring those alive. What I found was fascinating because the celebrations of the time were so different from today.

No Christmas trees, greeting cards, Santa Claus and reindeer, or striped candy canes permeated the Medieval Christmas celebration. And Christmas Day was just the beginning of the twelve days of celebrations back then. (Yes, that song has its origins in the celebrations of the Middle Ages.) Unlike today when it sometimes seems like it builds up to December 25th and is all over on the 26th.

Christmas was more rooted in religious rituals in fourteenth-century England. Most towns were built around a church and religion played a central part in the lives of the people of the times. It wasn’t something they did; it was who they were. Christmas was still a fundamentally religious celebration of Christ’s birth and the beginning of salvation. Celebration was in order, but that often meant activities meant educate and remind people of Biblical stories and songs and verses memorializing the events of the Savior’s birth.

But some things we have in common with them. Special foods were a particular treat during the Christmas season. Sweets, uncommon during much of the year other than the natural ones in fruits, were more widely consumed. And drinking alcoholic beverages formed a very large part of the festivities. Charity toward the less fortunate was encouraged particularly during the dark days of mid-winter. Music, dancing, plays, and gatherings of friends and families helped brighten the days and nights. Deeply religious they might have been, but they still loved a good party!

My First Published Novel is Now Available Again

The second in my Passions series of erotic Medieval historical romances is now available! Ruling Passion is a full-length novel that features handsome knights, a lady in distress who manages to get herself rescued, then has to face the consequences, and a story of two people kept apart by circumstances but drawn together by love for each other.

This was my very first published full-length novel. I’d had a number of short stories published in various magazines before then, but in 2001 an editor from Ellora’s Cave contacted me to ask if I had any novels I might consider publishing with them. I did, in fact, thought it wasn’t finished.  I emailed what I had to the editor and she sent back an enthusiastic, “Yes, I want it.”

I set to work, but that January, my father died and for a couple of months I couldn’t even think about writing. The editor was sympathetic and told me to take whatever time I needed. A couple of months later I was finally ready to get back to writing and it seemed like the story just flowed out of me at that point. I finished it within a month and we began a whirlwind round of back and forth edits that lasted another month or so. The book released in June, 2002.

It was put into print a few years later and had had numerous different covers since its first release. I haven’t tried to count how many, but I can remember at least four right off-hand. Despite that, it was my best-selling book for EC.

EC is now gone and I have rights back to all my stories. I’ve never been entirely happy with the way my stories were edited or some of the changes I was asked to make, so I’m going back and re-editing all of them. It’s a lot of work, but worth it to shape them into the stories I’ve always wanted them to be.

Suburban Dominants is Finally Complete

Whew!  It’s taken more time than I anticipated, but I’ve finally got the rest of the Suburban Dominants series re-edited and formatted for ebook release.  Kyle’sBargain, number four in the series, was out as of November 1 and Cilla’sMaster, number five, is now available for pre-order. Its scheduled release date is November 20th.

I’m still waiting for the cover for Secret Santa Sir, the last one in the series. Since it’s a Christmas story, I’m hoping to have it in time for a December 5th release.

Between getting those ready and the Naughty Literati stories, plus some family things, I’ve stayed really busy this year!

I do plan to release more of my backlist next year. I especially want to get my Passions series of medieval historicals out again, but I also have a couple of new things in process, including a novel, tentatively titled, Judith’s Challenge. A prequel to that story was in the Naughty Reunions anthology titled “Renovating the Relationship.”

Now Available Again

A while back I regained rights to a number of my books originally published at Ellora’s Cave, with the intention of republishing them myself. I had to wait, though, to get new covers done and have them re-edited.  It took a while, but I’m now able to announce the release of the first of them. Dominant Boys of Summer, the first in the Suburban Dominants series is available for 99 cents at most major ebook outlets.

Blurb: Julie is in love with Dave. She’s sure of that. But if he really is the man for her, why is her physical response to him so tepid? She’s afraid she’s frigid, and Dave deserves better than that. Dave’s best friend Nick guesses at a different answer and proposes a way to test out his theory.
When he joins them for an explosive beach weekend, Julie will learn some extraordinary things about herself. She’s never really understood her secret yearning to be mastered and dominated. Accepting that need and using it to build a relationship on that basis challenges her. Accepting that Nick is a part of the relationship with Dave adds another layer of complexity to an already complicated situation.

And a Quick Excerpt:

“Stand up,” Dave said.

After hesitating for a second, Julie stood. Since the two men approaching stared at her, she did the same, turning her attention from one to the other and then back. Both were handsome but in very different ways. Oddly their coloring belied their natures. Dave had the sunny disposition but his hair was almost black and his eyes the color of rich, dark chocolate. Cooler, harder, more introspective Nick had blond hair and green eyes. Dave was six foot two. Nick was a couple of inches shorter, with broader shoulders and a deeper chest. Nonetheless even with his slimmer build, Dave had solid muscles. Both men worked out to stay in shape as well as meeting often for tennis and golf.

Dave’s expression remained harder than normal. “Turn around.”

Julie did, despite the blush rising to her cheeks as she thought about them studying her oversized rear end.

“You can face us again,” Dave said after a couple of uncomfortable moments. His expression softened as he approached her. “Julie, I have to know if you still want to do this. You know what it entails. You’ve had time to think about it. Are you sure?”

She looked over at Nick, considering how it would change their relationship, then back to Dave. “Are you sure?”

He blinked in surprise. “If you are, I am. I’ve told you I’m willing to live with it.”

Humiliation warred with anger at herself. “You shouldn’t have to. If you think this will help me learn to respond to you, then I want to do it.”

“It’s not a case of you learning to respond,” Nick interjected. “But of us learning what you respond to. But we can only do this if you’re completely willing.”

“I am.”

“You know the rules? Remember the safe words?” Nick asked.

Julie nodded. “Yellow light and red light.”

“Good.”

Nick put the athletic bag he held on the sofa, opened the zipper and pulled out several leather straps. Her heart skipped into a double-time beat.

The men flanked her, Nick on her right and Dave on the left. Each buckled a leather strap around one of her wrists, not tight, but snug enough to stay in place. Then they each knelt and put them on her ankles as well.

“Whenever we put these on you, you’ll know that you’re expected to be submissive to us until we remove them,” Nick said after he straightened up again. “You understand?”

“Yes.” The word came out as a bare breath.

“Yes what?”

“Yes, Sir. Forgive me, Sir.”

Sneak Peak from Katherine Kingston

My story in the Naughty Reunions anthology is actually a prequel to a novel I'm currently working on. The story in the anthology features Brad and Dani Carpenter, who find a way to resolve a sexual incompatibility with some help from their employer/friend Drew Robertson. The novel currently in process (tentatively titled Judith's Challenge) is set a few years later, and is the story of Judith Delaney, another employee of Drew's who becomes much more to him than a business assistant. But before they can get there, they have a lot of baggage to overcome and things to work out.  Right now, this story is about two-thirds done and I haven't decided yet whether to self-publish or submit it to a publisher.

But I decided to give you a sneak peak at it.  If you'd like more information about the progress of the story, please go to my website at http://katherinekingston.com and sign up for my brand new newsletter. I hope to start sending out newsletters no more than once a month.

Without further ado, here's the excerpt:

Enormous, forbidding iron gates blocked the entrance to the estate, forcing Judith Delaney to stop the car. Their grand presence revived all her doubts about whether she should have come. Graceful scrollwork curled around on itself densely enough to prevent anyone from squeezing through, and a crown of lethal picket spear-points along the top threatened anyone foolish enough to try to climb over it. Andrew Robertson guarded his privacy.

Drawing a deep breath, she reached out to the box nearby and entered the numeric code the agency had given her, pressing the buttons on a keypad sheltered in what looked like a miniature Japanese pagoda.  For a moment, nothing happened. Then the intimidating gates swung open, quietly and with surprising speed.

A winding drive meandered through forested land until the house itself came into view.  No, not a house.  Mansion.  It sprawled out ahead, three long stories of brick, fronted by an enormous columned front porch.  She counted a dozen windows across each of the two upper levels. The façade’s blank, incessant symmetry struck her as unfriendly, almost brooding. All the windows appeared to have drawn shades or closed blinds shuttering the. Privet hedge clipped into rigid box shape lined the foundation on either side, marching in a straight row to either corner of the building. Only the front porch which held an array of white-painted wicker rockers interspersed with planters bearing brilliant red geraniums softened the forbidding look.

The estate sat in a narrow valley not far from the city of Asheville, but the North Carolina hills on either side and the high, spiked fence surrounding it lent an air of greater isolation.

She parked in front of the main door and waited a moment, fighting the nervous flutters in her stomach. Finally she got out, climbed three steps to the porch, and rang the doorbell.

Moments later, the door swung open and a man stood there, his face set in grim, harsh lines.  Arched, sandy eyebrows rose as he stared at her. “Yes?”

“I’m Judith Delaney,” she managed with only a slight stammer. She’d seen one grainy picture of the reclusive owner of the estate, and there was a resemblance… Surely he wouldn’t be answering his own doorbell. “I had an appointment with Mr. Robertson. The Seabolt Agency sent me.”

“Oh, yes.” The stern expression relaxed a fraction. He nodded and stepped back, letting her enter a grand, spacious hall. White painted walls, classic mahogany furniture and expensively framed paintings screamed elegance. The crystal chandelier hanging from two stories above likely cost more than her entire last year’s salary.

“Andrew Robertson,” the man said, drawing her attention away from the magnificence of the surroundings and confirming her unlikely suspicion.  “I hope you had a safe and pleasant trip here. Let’s go back to my office.”

But first, he extended a hand.

Judith had to make herself reach out and take it. His palm was warm and a little rough. For a moment she was fine, then the feel of the strong, masculine fingers against hers sent a wave of memory crashing over her.

Hands clamped around her wrists and ankles, holding her in place despite her struggles, while someone lay atop her and forced…

No!  She pushed the memory away, recovering control, hoping he hadn’t noted her momentary lapse.  To cover it, she said, “You answer the door yourself?”

He shrugged.  “The butler gets every other Thursday off.”

“Today’s Tuesday.”

“He keeps losing his calendar.”

“I hope he doesn’t lose too many other things.”

Nothing changed in his expression when he answered, “Last time I counted the spoons were all there. But he does sometimes forget which side of the plate they go on.”

“Isn’t that a cardinal sin for a butler?”

“Actually it’s probably the least among this butler’s sins.”

“Should that give me hope?”

“Are you applying for the butler’s job? I don’t remember advertising for one.” A sudden laugh broke up the severe expression. Mischievous lights danced in blue-gray eyes. “But in fact, keeping track of my calendar is part of the position I’m looking to fill. You don’t lose them, do you?”

“No, but I’m not perfect either, and I don’t know that anything less would do for this place.”

The man’s expression turned grim again in an instant. “Believe me, there are no perfect beings in residence here.”
